I have power steering on my 90 but I think it may be needing some attention as there seems to be excessive play, so the wheel needs to go a fair bit before the wheels start to move.

Say I am on a country road mainly cornering to the right and I keep the wheel over in to the right it will be fine, but then I come to a left hand bend and I feel that I am not actually in control for a split second.

When it was manual I would swing it about the same roads no bother, but when I was out on Friday night I felt almost like I was a learner again as the steering was not responding properly so I was sort of training myself to act a little earlier and PREPARE the wheel, i.e. get it over to "bite point".

I took the disco out later that evening and I tried to measure the amount of turn on the wheel before the wheels turned and it was instant.

I reckon in the 90 I need to move the wheel about 40° of the opposite way it was last going in to get it to respond and the disco about 5°.

Not nice!

I take it there is an adjustment on these boxes? If I can't adjust it then what is the most likely cause?

Also, I do have the full size wheel on, so if there is any give its being slightly multiplied, but I still think its excessive.

If its going to be expensive I will just put the manual box back on.

No, it's the DROP ARM BALL JOINT, Buster you should know this!!! Also you can tighten the box up - there is a bolt on top with a bolt going through it - undo the outer bolt, do the inner one up as tight as you reasonably can (not TOO tight!) then do the outer one back up, it might help but the drop arm ball joint is the most likely contender...now who did that excellent review on how to do it again???

Mine was fine before the pas was put in and I kept the same drop arm so it's probably the box in my case, so I am going to go for the adjustment then Odenne.

Thanks

Doh! That part slipped me mind Oddie. Ah wouldn't go tightenin' the adjuster screw down too tight or ye'll bugger yer box:eek: It's a two man job fur that, one tae wiggle the steerin' wheel a bit and the other tae adjust the box at the same time until neerly all the play is taken up. If ye do a search it's been covered on here before;)

Check for play in the drop arm ball joint before you do anything else as it's the most likely problem (that combined with wear in the sots Buster pointed out will give lots of play, but my money is mainly on the drop arm ball joint!)

OK I tightened the bolt up and its sorted now. Thanks. I won't look like I am drunk on the motorway now.
