I think my 200tdi PAS pump is on its way out. Whenever I turn the wheel it makes a horrendous groaning noise, the steering has also got heavy and just feels like it can't do the job and the noise gets worse at higher revs. The pulley wheel on the front of the pump also seems to have moved forwards, as in the shaft has play in it, to the point where its caused the alternator belt to twist and almost fall apart. Just to confirm before I get one, PAS pumps dead right?

Also, any tips you'd give on changing one? The Haynes mentions something about removing a shield from under the car. Whats this about?

Cheers, Joe.

Yes, I think it's a safe bet the PS pump has failed - mine went exactly like this a few years ago and replacement cured it. I think it was fairly straightforward - just make sure you bleed it as per Haynes manual before you go for a drive or it might get interesting!
Don't know about the undershield - i don't think there's one on mine but the Haynes book is very biased to 300tdi in my opinion - no photos of 200's at all.
Cheers, Peter.
