Can you recondition them yourself? If so, where do you get the parts?
Has anyone bought recon units from 'Steering Specialists Limited' and have a view on their quality?
 
Not sure, afaik the only bit that really wears is the bottom of the main shaft, also corrodes which chews the new seal.

That link is very interesting, thank you. Could well come in very handy. I have searched for threads but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Mine's not leaking, I've just got a bit of steering wander, so wondering if the steering box is worn inside.
I'm going to get the Mrs to turn the steering wheel while I'm underneath today, to see if its the joint on the end of the drop arm. If not, I suspect the box.

Steering wander is often the result not enough swivel housing preload [ an adjustment that is straight forward to do]
However all trackrod/steering rod joints must be good and uj's on steering column not have any play.
It is possible to adjust the box its self to take up internal play provided that the input and output shafts have no side to side movement in them

As above - Once you have checked the rest of the system, The adjustment is quite easy to do, but be patient, and adjust it a little at a time. There's a thread on here somewhere about how to do it.... which a search will find...

Once I've checked the drop arm joint, the pre-load will be the next thing investigated. Forgot about that and have read people discussing it a number of times. :oops: Hopefully, that will sort it, if not, I'll try adjusting it.

what are you after parts wise,drop arm comes off easier with the box removed a set of pullers and a large hammer to whack the arm to stretch it

I was just thinking ahead, James. If the slightly vague steering turns out to be the PAS box, I was just wondering if I could recondition it myself. The cost of a recon unit makes this cross your mind. IIRC you recondition them at work, I think I read that in an old thread.
I've checked obvious stuff like the tyre pressures and all other joints are new in the rebuild. The drop arm joint will be the old one. Was going to check it this afternoon after fitting CDL system, but it's pouring down now, so no lying on the drive tonight!
 
ive done quite a few over the years,you can certainly strip it and check parts condition you can replace all seals and sector shaft needle roller bearings (3) rebuilding to spec often improves a box
 
I presume if the needle bearings go, then the movement on the shaft causes leaks? Does the needle bearings going cause vague steering?
If it's not the drop arm joint I'm thinking pre-load on the bearings next, before the PAS box.
 
generally bearings are good unless they completely fail and damage the shaft, its usually setting box that can improve things though if input shafts (it has an inner and outer part the tortion between the 2 gives the power steering)worn its a scrap box generally as parts arent avaiable
