PAS box leak from side

Afternoon all,

After recently purchasing a '99 disco 2 td5 I noticed the PAS box was leaking from the side. The exploded diagram seems to have the 1" screw in panel/plug marked as a piston/rack adjuster and has a small hex screw at the bottom (part 13 on the diagram below).

Does anyone know what this actually does? Should I just try and tighten the 1" screw in plug more? Or is it set in a specific number of turns? Can it be removed and it's seals replaced or will a heap of gubbins fall out?

The adjuster removes any "Slack" there may be in the box but I've heard once you need to start adjusting to remove said slack the box is probably on its way out anyways
There is a pipe under the bottom somewhere that rubs and gets worn through, this may be the cause of your leak - Just a thought!

13 is rack adjuster if it is sealed with an o ring but a little rtv on the oring doesnt hurt , if you remove it you must ensure box is central and you need to remove thrust pad as well sticking it to adjuster with vaseline helps when refitting to ensure it stays in the correct position , you then screw adjuster in till it takes up any freeplay , adjust too much and steering will get tighter in as you go to full lock, not enough will give play in steering

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll maybe try a little silicon round the outside of the thread this evening. The position is already marked with a blob of paint, so I'm assuming it's a recon box (service history does show it was replaced a couple of years back). Regarding the little grub screw at the bottom, should it just be tightened all the way in? I'm assuming it's suppose to hold the large adjuster screw in place?

yes it just locks the adjuster
