Good morning,

installed lpg some 3k miles ago, and played with the timing.
I've lost and ended up with either hgf (dont think so) or piston rings. Signs are oil mist blowing out of crank case breather, like 1l every 100mi.

Didn't do a compression test, but I know I've been driving with about 15-20 deg BTDC for about 100mi, and a lot with about 12-10 deg BTDC. No overheating tho (thank god I got meself a EGT gauge). No oil in the water either. Now I'm set on 6 deg BTDC.

Now three questions:
Checking if it's the rings is doing a compression test (warm, open throttle), then doing it again with a bit of oil in the cylinder, right?
Rebuild or put a 200tdi in?
I know I can get all parts for the 2.25. Are there any parts I can't get or can't do myself in a 200tdi?

Background:
S3 1978 (petrol 3 bearing, turner head 8:1 fitted about 12 years ago)
Doing lots of motorway miles (about 5k miles a year) with 50-60mph, but OD fitted.

:search:
Anything that can not be repaired/bought new for the 200tdi? Afaik you can buy everything for the 2.25...
Much has been written about the merits of the 200tdi, inc the differences between disco and defender versions, the ease (or otherwise) of converting, and even the merits of removing the turbo and/or changing the transfer box. Search and ye shall find.....:)

Well, I've found someone who'll do it for 200 quid.
But if I dont like it, they're like 6-800 over here... in BAD condition, w/o starter, turbo and alternator.
And these 450 quid have to compete with parts for rebuilding the 2.25 (lets say 200quid: pistons, rings, bearings, hg)...

Or do you want to bring it over here storm? Just got a second flat just round the corner with a big bedroom, and I pay in lager or hefeweizen!-)
