Parking in gear with handbrake off

As a 4x4 instructor we always taught that the parking brake should be applied with the button pressed down to avoid wear on the pawl. However, the parking brake should not be applied until the vehicles was stopped and resting on the gear, either first or reverse. It should always be called the parking brake not the handbrake as it should only be used when parked or stationary. In addition when entering the vehicle the very first thing that you should do is to put your your foot on the footbrake this reduces the possibility of vehicle runaway if on a slope and the parking brake is not as good as it should be. Interestingly, on the latest Defender it is advised in the handbook that you should hear the clicks as you apply the parking brake.

Why do people have to make things so complicated? You stop, you put the bloody thing in gear, then when the gear has the weight, you put the bloody parking brake on as a secondary safety device. End of.

no autobox has castleated wheel on rear output shaft when you select park you can shear park wheel off ,tlc i was just wondering if you understood the reason why its park and not hand brake or just did as book said without understanding

because it acts on shaft with diff in the line ,if you put torque back throuigh diff the unbraked side can be reversed ie if you tow motor off in too low a gear wheels want to go in opposite directions ,worse on def than sreies as you have centre diff as well as rear
