You don't want to be doing that it'll cost ya a fortune in new cables and that smelly liquid stuff you poor in the hole in the back will keep disapearing :D :D
people told me it was normal for that smelly stuff to dissapear.you know, a landrover thing.so what your saying is if i leave it parked up [with handbrake off] then my fuel and maintence bills will be reduced

Yes most definatly (with normal cars any way) but as were talking about landys it will reduce maintanence cost a bit cos they still seem to go wrong even when not being used   ya got love a landy, jesus i thought some birds were high maintanence :D :D

I'm afraid i'm old enough to remember when best advice was to use the handbrake, and because most of them were useless, and leave it in gear, and if on a hill point the front wheels into the kerb. In that way your car might still be there when you get back.

Of course, these days modern car technology is much improved (unless you drive a citroen in the nineties when Xantia handbrakes had a habit of failing) so using just a parking brake on a modern vehicle should suffice.

Getting back to Land Rovers I suggest you read my first paragraph. :)

better to use the handbrake....

Leaving in gear will work and not cause damage but if you do this instead of using the handbrake the handbrake will sieze up then it'll fail the MOT. You get a lot more siezed handbrakes than you get snapped cables. Lots of automatic cars fail on handbrake as folk just stick em in Park and dont bother using the handbrake.

I concur. No more needs said other than DO NOT use the ratchet when pulling on the handbrake. It will wear out and only women and poofs do it anyway..

...unless it's a Vauxhall - if you don't use the ratchet the teeth don't engage properly and the hand brake flies off.

well perhaps i'm just lucky as well as gay then
have always pulled up on the ratchet (mainly cuz i dont know me own strength and tend to rip the cables out , counting clicks dont stretch um so quickly) have had 2 landy's previece to me currant td5 that have had for 12 years + never warn out the series 2a handbrake in 12 years , the old 90 TD i still have and the ratchet still works perfectly (had that 1 for 14 years now)

:confused:To settle this, are there any driving instructors out there who can advise on the "correct" useage of the handbrake?

Driving instructors tend not to be mechanical engineers ;)

They can tell you when to apply the handbrake but thats not the question.... Is it?

The ratchet may make a loverly sound but it will be wearing the pawl probably not enough to really worry about.

But it will be in your best interest to use the release switch when engaging as well as disangaing yr handbrake. ;)

Q4) Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle.

A4) Apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying parking brake (handbrake) so that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel.

TIP- Keep the button pressed in when aplying the handbrake so that you do not hear the ratchet noise.
