Been thinking of buying of of these and now reading this forum I'm scared!!

I've been looking at a 2001 Vogue with 50K miles. Taken it for a test drive and it drove well, no strange noises and all the electrics I tested worked. I didn't test the cruse control or low box. I wanted this P38 as a "Chelsea Tractor" to convert to LPG to go up the motorway in a plesent environment.

Questions.
Have any P38 owners got anything good to say about them or are they all dogs and to be avoided??

If there are some good ones what should I be looking for before I go back to the P38 I've been looking at and part with my hard earned cash?

Can any P38 owners help?

welcome must be loads of nice things abot them we have them. great car if you get a good one you will love it. if you get a bad one you will hate it, and have no money. take some body with you that knows them well goodluck. j

don't forget though m8,
most folks come on here looking for advice when things go wrong,
folks don't bother posting just to say there car is running well and don't really need help:D
p38's are same as most other cars, there are good and bad in every make, model and style..

p38/gaylanders are unreliable
(yes I have had several dealings with them)
If you like pain and suffering we have the slipped liner club joining is unexpected.
My suggestion is unless you have plenty of spare cash-buy a disco

check the coolant!!!

check everything thrice then check the coolant once more

ask any of the fellas on here what my usual advice is for buying a petrol p38 and they will tell you:

check the coolant!!!

Lol, so you think I should check the coolant then??

its one of the most important things when buying one, search over heating, slipped liners porous block.

its probablt the most devastating thing that can happen to the engine, i doubt many of these cars would have been scrapped if the engines were made to a better standard!

I love mine and putting aside it's quirks and the initial teething pains I wouldn't change it, but I'd check both the transfer box and cruise first, particularly the cruise if you want it for the m-ways, you'll see plenty of people here with flakely ones, mine included. It can be easy to fix if it's just a perished vacuum hose, but could be a pig if it's more than that.

The P38 really isn't that different to buying any other secondhand car, just research and know what to look for particularly with air suspension (plenty of advice here), take someone who knows them if you can, and there are several buyers guide available online; as well as very carefully checking the usual 2ndhand car stuff, oil in coolant, coolant in oil, and that all the electrical goodies function as they should.

Be ready to start knocking the readies off the price if there are small things, be ready to walk away quickly if there's anything more than that, especially if it's going to be your daily drive.
