Dear RR's

Well ... started out as a hose, became a water pump/fan replace ... then noticed that the black plastic turbo intake manifold was loose. Stripped away a layer of complication (leading to the unfortunate demise of the exhaust manifold heat shield....! ) and found that whoever last fiddled around had neglected to do up the jubillee on the turbo intake. So I rather suspect that for some unknown period of time the turbo has not been getting nice filtered air, but grotty old engine compartment muck. I have access to the inlet and outlet of the turbo now -

The outlet was a bit oily ... is that normal ?
and Is there anything I can/should do to check the condition of the turbo before I put everything back ?

thanks for any suggestions
krgds

The outlet pipe being the little pipe that connects back to the sump? Yes, bound to be a little oil in there and a good job to make sure all is clear. Make sure the waste-gate is free to move.

Not sure about servicing it. Never done mine. @wammers or @kds will know.

thanks Grrrrrr and tomcat - yes its the air inlet "manifold" / "pipe" that was loose and by "oulet" I meant the air outlet to the intercooler - I notice that a kit to "rebuild" turbo is 30 quid whilst a turbo is almost 900.. whats the collective opinion on whether using a kit like this is worth doing ? mine is on 105000m

They'll be a bit of oil in the intercooler too. Needs flushing every so often. If you haven't done it it is worth flushing. I just use petrol but maybe I am naughty.

As for the turbo, mine's on 150k and still seems to be working!

Brilliant - thanks guys - well after finding this helpful vid - I sort of thought I knew enough to be dangerous - poked my finger in the outlet (!) and fiddled with the compressor vane (!!) - all spins nicely and no play in and out or up and down (!!!) ....
will do that intercooler Grrrrrrr - must be full of oily muck - might even have some acceleration when I've finished, better find my g suit.

Intercooler should be flushed every 48,000 miles. Check pipe from under manifold to MAP sensor is clear with no splits also the manifold nipple and the inlet to the MAP sensor. Use a little contact cleaner several times for MAP and blow out gently only, don't be poking things down it.
