I've had Dave (my defender 300Tdi) for about 5 months, but only done about 500 miles or so.
In that time, I've topped up about 2 litres of oil.!
I know that's a lot, but most of it was pishing from the diesel lift pump (found the source eventually) - that's a story for another thread :)
Anyway, since I've stopped all visible external oil leaks (parked over cardboard for 3 weeks with no drips) I've probably done 250 miles total. 150 of them since cleaning out intercooler and old pipework.
Not seen any noticeable difference on the dipstick, but what I considered to be a lot of black, sticky oil in the previously spotless pipes - considering I'd only done 150 miles.
I know it's from the turbo, as the only thing going in is clean air from the new air filter. I blanked off the re-circulation inlet from the crankcase breather, which currently vents to air via a plastic milk bottle - soon to be replaced with a cheapy oil catch tank from the fleabay.
For me it's a shame you had the leak from the lift pump gasket. I would have liked to be able to compare your poorly turbo passing oil with mine. My intercooler pipes coat with oil quite quickly after cleaning. I'm putting about 250ml of oil in every 250-300 miles.
Did your exhaust fumes look and smell as though you were burning a bit of oil?
 
No he's too posh for a Landrover.must have heated seats & a working heater.
But the kids like to come out with me off road

He needs to get a better car then!! We have heated/cooled seats and a remote heater control:) and it’s got LR across the bonnet.:)
And kids always enjoy mud. And so they should:)

Since I bought it and since I've started fettling, I've not noticed any excessive smoke or smells from the exhaust. In fact, having driven 200Tdi, 300Tdi and TD5 defenders over the past 30 years, it's one of the clearest exhausts I've seen. - however, this is my 1st personally owned defender, so I'm paying a lot more attention to it than any others I've driven.

When I started fiddling, I 1st noticed oil in the intercooler to inlet manifold pipe - I then took off the turbo to intercooler pipe (oil) - then I had a peek in the air filter to turbo pipe (oil from breather inlet to turbo).
I knew there was a fair bit of oil blowing from the turbo through the intercooler, but wasn't sure if this was from the turbo itself (old seals) or was coming in from the cyclone breather and just being sucked through and blown out by the turbo.

I took all the pipes off and cleaned them. New air filter, new Alisport breather cyclone - outlet pipe from this into milk bottle, used a black plastic wine cork to blank the inlet hole to air pipe where this should have gone. fitted lovely, but being paranoid about it being sucked in to the turbo, I drilled a hole through it and put 2 cable ties through and also clamped it in place with a stainless jubilee clip - it's going nowhere now.
So put everything back together and the only thing going in to the turbo now is clean air through a clean pipe from a new air filter.
150 miles later - noticeable oil in pipes downstream of turbo.
That's what took me down the road of buying a new CHRA and the rest is at the start of this thread.

The only thing I'd do different with hindsight - I'd have taken the manifold off and sent it straight off to be done, with the old turbo still attached.

That would have saved a bit of aggravation and lots of head shaking and scowls from my Mrs. :)

2. Fitting the bottom oil pipe is a right PITA. It took at well over an hour to get both bolts to bite, by which time the supplied paper gasket was trashed. Fortunately the original gasket was solid plastic and could be reused. So far no leaks.

It would have been way better and easier if you had removed the drain tube from the block, installed it onto the turbine first then installed the tube onto the block.
