P38

I'm looking to sell mine if your interested - its got overheating issues though (suspected HGF)

I'd be amazed if there are any truly, genuinely fault free P38s for sale, outside of the specialist forums of course.

The newest P38 is now over a decade old, and nothing lasts forever. I think the buying process comes down to a risk assessment. Satisfying yourself you've identified the faults, and figuring out whether you can live with them, can fix them yourself, of if you have the means to pay someone else to fix them.

Failure to make yourself aware of issues when buying a car as old and complicated as a P38 is extremely foolhardy! Note I think the OP has done the right thing in coming here for advice, but I shudder to think how many 'cheap' Range Rovers are bought by Joe Public and are never properly maintained, it's why such care is needed when looking in the second hand market.

Good luck with the search!

Oh yeah, and a P38 on finance?! Do me a favour! :)

P.s thanks for all the input guys. Not seen yhr above car yet as its 4 hours away from me. Sounds a genuine seller. An6 extra info welcomed. What should I look out for when collecting as deposit is refundable if need be

Looks nice, those roof bars are worth a fair bit too if you're not fussed on keeping them.

As for checking it out, just the usual RR stuff really - EAS, over heating, wet carpets in the drivers footwell, being the main things.

Seeing as though they haven't listed any faults I would assume fault free....if not cite trade descriptions act as not listing them and there ends up being some....would put them on a sticky wicket and you firmly in bat!

The amount of 'fault free' described P38's i looked at only to find issues was unreal. In the end though i did eventually find one but had to pay top dollar to get as near perfect example as possible (Landie enthusiast used to take it to shows etc).
The 4.6 looks like a good deal though, providing it's as described. Is it Gems or Thor? I'd personally go for a later Thor, Bosch set up.

Thanks for all of your help and input so far. Mucch appreciated and helpful. The guy sounded pretty genuine on the phone. He went through all of the service history with me and sounded very well looked after.
As for checking air suspension do I just press the buttons anr make surr It goes up and down a few times? I asked the seller about it and asked if it sags over night of which he said no which was good to hear.
hopefully I can get it hot enough to see if it overheats.
Will also check for water hopefully no leaks. Start of some bubbling on rear arches he said but that doesnt bother me. Hes also adding 6 months tax.
Any other input valued :)

Yep, check that the suspension goes to all heights ok and does it quickly. I saw some that took almost a minute to go up when it should be more like 5 secs.

Gems/Thor is the engine management. It changed over around 99/00 with Thor (motronic) being the newer version.

Have a read of mez.co.uk as well as there's a good guide on there if what to check.

Gems will have 4.6 stamped on the black rectangular plenum chamber, Thor will have a what looks like a bunch of bananas as your intake manifold. :)

This one doesnt have 4.6 stamped on it. From the pics it just has vogue SE. But a quick car check says its a hse. Confused.com haha. Ok I'll look out for that also. Quite excited ti be honest. My old dear just wants to get her hands on it too. Just as she does with my Merc 500SEL and my departing E320 CDI even though she has a newer e class haha

I noticed the VOGUE SE badge, been looking for one of those for ages as mine is a vogue se but just has the vogue badge.

TBH, the spec doesn't mean much as spec can be customised anyway. I'm not too clued up on exact spec differences but :
SE - usually Poverty spec
HSE - leccy seats etc
VOGUE - only in 4.6 inc sat nav / walnut throughout
vOGUE SE - as vogue but with custom sound system, real wood trim

Seems as the one I'm about to buy has the h/k soundd system in there. Oooo real wood thats why it looks a tad lighter than walnut. I like top spec!! I want it nowww
