Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of a reasonably cheap engine fault code reader for a 2000 (x) rangie v8 4.0? it running like a complete bag of spanners at the moment so i fancy reading the fault codes to have a go myself! i've been told that the engine is a different fault code reader to the rest of the car, is that right or am i listening to idiots?

They can be a nightmare to own but who cares, if we wanted to drive without a hitch we'd all be in X5's and very dull!

Cheers Guys and Gals

Dan

Dan,
First of all before you look for codes, clean the MAF, (Mass Airflow Sensor). If this is very sooty it can drive Long Term fuel trims awry, see Cleaning the MAF - solving overdrive problems
Use brake or carb cleaner to spray the element inside the housing. IME this can make a huge difference to idle quality and general running.
Secondly, change the air filter.
Third, pour some injector cleaner into the petrol tank; if this has not been done for some time the Injectors can be all gummed-up and dribbling instead of spraying properly.
Fourth; change the spark plugs and HT leads because both break down over time.
Once those tasks are done the engine should be running a lot better. If you still need to I use the OBD lead from Alex Peper in the USA - OBD-2 Vehicle Explorer Scan Tool Browser for my Ford, the Range Rover/Land Rover uses the ISO connection so send for one of those. It's not too expensive and the very powerful software and all upgrades are free.
