Hi there wise ones! I have a 98 4.0 v8 rangie that has aparantly had a replacement engine at some point, the problem is that the log book still sports the original number. I have has a good look around in all the usual places for the engine nuimber (N/S adjacent to dip stick on the flat down there between exhaust manifold ports etc) but can't find anything, the only number i can find is actually cast into the ally block on the underside of the engine below the exhaust manifold this is LCF000250 but it certainly isn't a factory rover V8 number. Does any one know if the engine number can be found without dismanleling too much engine and if so where i can find it.
Fanks Tim

hello mate the engine number is a little difficult to see ( well with my eye`s it is :) ) better to use a torch , its located on the right hand side of the engine seen as you stand at the front of the car if you look sort of between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head between cylinders 3 and 5 you should be able to see it there should be the compression ratio i.e 9.35:1 the just under that the engine number , if its not there then there could be a couple of reasons for this maybe its a non factory recon and the reconditioners have stamped their own number somewhere  or it may have a chequered history i.e knocked off :) other than that i cant really see any reason to remove it   i hope this helps
rick.

Still can't seem to find it must be there somewhere tho i might remove the zaust heat shield at the weekend and see if that helps me see cheers for your help

there should be no need to take off the heat shields you should be able to see it without i can on mine :)
hmmmm now im concerned im sure i know where it should be, but the plate is blank, it hasen't been ground off or scraped off i am wondering if its been fitted with a rimmer bros engine or some like company and am now more determined to get to the bottom of this more sugestions would be great

note the engine number is NOT on a plate its actually stanped into the block its self

So if the deck face has been planed,to correct warpage or to put a flat surface on top hat liners etc the original engine number will be lost. Some engine reman companies do engine numbers, some dont.
