Hi all,

I am making a bracket to relocate my transmission cooler, becuse

.. I want to finish my plate steel bumper, and thats stupid transmission cooler is blocking my view.

So now I moved it, and I can see ways forward

here is the bracket I'm in the middle of making, good craic this, all I'm using using an arc welder and an angle grinder really

I melted the sh**e out of that steel, it was lovely. I have an mild case of pyromania.

So I've yet to finesse it, and then spray it, to stop it rusting,
and then plumb the cooler back in.

I'm making some questionable decisions around cutting the cooler hoses with an angle grinder - but I figure if i let it weep, it will carry the steel particles away, then I'll just top up with clean fluid.

I'm outside and its winter again

I ran the blowtorch over some transmission fluid, and it didn't catch fire.

So I felt safe to cut the transmission cooler lines with a grinder, near the main radiator.
I let the lines bleed for a moment to clear away any metal particles.

Then I attached the new oil hoses, and refilled the autobox with fresh dexron II

I neglected to test it out and took off down the motorway, to find I was losing fluid, I could hear a hissing noise. So yeah, moral is, do a test run if you are moving the cooler.

Why does the doozle have the cooler in different place to petrol ? Aren't they the same gearbox ?

The auto`s are the same as the 4.0 but the doozle has this big intercooler and engine oil cooler in front of the rad :D
the manual doozle has the gearbox oil cooler in the bottom of the rad

It's a shame the cooler in the engine rad isn't sufficient enough for the auto box and we could lose it when a metal bumper is fitted. I've seen the cooler moved into the already cramped space between the headlights.

cheers bud ) did some more work on it yesterday. Nearly there.

Trying to figure out what to paint it with, I'm thinking stone chip might be durable, normal paint just falls off as soon as you impact anything.
I built the bumper for shunting things.

There's that acrylic paint that goes on cranes and so forth but it is pretty pricy. Hammerite is usually decent. Stonechip sounds good.

Is looking good Ned.

Few the lads moved it about. Was it @Salisbury Nick put it up on the chassis near the EAS pump? Good place to be out the way but turned out to be tad hot up in there.
Keep us updated
Hi guys, Yes it was me. Seems to work - but jury is still out. Got a fan on it. Definitely had a few problems with the gearbox slipping - however, turned that was due to an oil leak rather than the oil temperature. I was expecting to find out more this weekend as we were heading out to Mid-Wales for green laning weekend - but looks like EAS problems may scupper that plan.

Good man - that's what I did too - set the gearbox oil on fire in the process, but on the whole it worked out OK

Mine didn't catch fire. Strange that it didn't catch when I ran the blowtorch over it.

Chrome it, galvanise it, both interesting suggestions. I did another two hours grinding it flat with a flap disk, so it's further on now.
Gonna stick it on the car tomo and see where I'm at.

Yup - Thats two of us that did precisely that. Did the Ridgeway drive with transmission fluid ****ing out of a dodgy clamp join. Ended up driving home in top gear OK but then slipping transmission - by the time I got it to a garage there was almost nothing left!

Looking good. If you chrome it then it will look fabulous - but then you'll chip it and rasp it and it'll look tatty and you'll be sad.

Cheers man, I read that thread, lol quite a thread. The Hippopotamus song is very good.
So how has it worked out?

The pictures of your rad caked in mud has convinced me to add something to shield the rad from the glorious mud

I have been reading Jeep XJ forums, and the general rule seems to be that no matter what you put on it, trees will scrape it off,
so most of them don't bother with a lacquer, and instead just respray as damage occurs.

That seems a logical way to proceed.

This is how its sits today.

I'm going to paint it fast and then return to it some other time. This is the kind of object that is never finished, so I'll just stick it back on and enjoy it as it is, this sprint is over.
