It's not a dissimilar disease.

When I was in India, a garage striped down a gearbox, just changed the cog and put it back together, I said to him that would have been thrown away in the UK, he said he wished he had the stuff we threw away, he would fix it and sell it on

That is the way it was done when i served my time. But with the ridiculous hourly rates charged by main dealers that would be out of the question today. So the mechanics who work for them never learn how to do it. Take old out bolt in new is today's method.

Adding to that, parts built by machines all day at low cost and high volume.

Pics of the S.box work wouldn’t go amiss

My old Mentor/mechanic, put an old Borg Warner 35 infront of me on my first day as an Apprentice, and said "rebuild it". I had an old workshop manual too! lucky me!

It took me a whole workday to do it the first time,

He stepped in once completed and pulled it apart and put it back together in "not joking" 28 minutes.

Once done he stepped aside and told me to do it again..

And again and again etc etc

It takes me around 35mins to rebuild one, still haven't beaten his record!!

Just goes to show the skill of old mechanics..

David my old mentor when i was an apprentice, used to throw nuts and bolts at me randomly to check I was watching what went on. I learned so many skills from him, lots that transfer over into other areas, a lot were just a mind set on thinking how to approach each job.
I also, had apprentices under me, some have gone on to be far greater than I ever hoped I'd be but they all come back occasionally just to get my approach on seemingly tricky jobs or old technical info they know I'll have retained.

My proudest moment was an old apprentice brought his son and his sons 2 stroke gokart engine to me saying "we are here, boy, because if there is the slimmest of chances this can be fixed this bloke can do it and itll go faster too I bet" (turns out basically the crankcase wasnt sealed(2stroke))
All basic observational stuff learned from David.
The older guys served much longer apprenticeships and they had earned their titles the hard way. I speak to todays techs and 70% is plug in plug in plug in and they hardly even get their hands dirty any more.

The box should be a zf 8076974102 box from what I can see. I'm sure it will have been fitted to other vehicles.

The ANR5321KIT number I've had a short while but having difficulty sourcing one.

Assist me sourcing one and it will be my pleasure to, but pointless until that point.

Mine was only leaking.
I’d give building one good one out of what you have a go, particularly with the skills you mentioned.
Rebuild kit would be ideal, anything other than buying a new one.

No, i think it's good.
Leaks like fat lad on a rape charge.
Then can't source a kit.

If I have a kit it wont be needed but I can do it anyway.

I did the overhaul on my old Classic steering box. Was a bit fiddly, but not difficult. There's a detailed procedure in RAVE with pictures, but nothing for the P38 box overhaul.
