So my P38 went clean through its MOT the other day, result! But the tester did say my steering box is at the very limit of what he can allow .
Now, I have an unknown used steering box to hand but back when I was an apprentice we used to rebuild these with an overhaul kit.
This is where my issues lay. I, cannot for the life of me find a suitable overhaul kit.

Do any of you parts wizards know if theres a kit out there or will one from another vehicle be suitable say a late D2 etc ?

I've adjusted all the slack/backlash I can out already and all the ball joints/arms/rods/bushes are all recently renewed which has isolated the play to be in the steering box.
If theres no suitable kit then I'll change out the box.

Thanks in advance all.

It's a '97 RHD 2.5 DIESEL AUTO

Get one from a breaker?

I already have a spare steering box but I'm not a repair by replacement fella, I prefer to rebuild to fix.
The spare box I already have is an unknown quantity, the same as any breaker sourced item. If I can rebuild it before swapping it in I'll be a much happier bunny and so won't need to revisit it under there again, being the plan.

They are normally a pretty long lived item so a second hand one (which you already have) from a low mileage car is not much of a gamble.

Whilst I agree, this ones only lasted 130k it's not to say the replacement wont give up in 6 months and I dont want to repeat the job.
It's a false economy, surely.

Ideally I'd buy a new or recon one but at 4 figures for the former it's not likely when I've rebuilt lots of boxes previously.
It's like me saying just throw a brand new becm on an electrical problem car when I know I can replace a power board and rebuild a good clone for pennies and some of my time. (obviously if it had power board type issues)
I'm sure you get where I'm coming from, I just want to source a rebuild kit that's available for every other blooming Land Rover except this bugger !

Might be a case of pulling it apart and measuring the required seals and bits?
But what about the metal wear. I. E worm drive and follower..

I'm lazy, I always take the easy option, I have one (scrap) P38 on 167K and the steering box is fine, the other 2 are on 135K and 150K and again the steering boxes are OK, so I would take a box from a low mileage scrapper as the easy option, but that's just me..

I can see where that's where I'm most likely going to end up but I have to make every effort to complete my original objective.
