P38 steering box overhaul kit.

There is a limited amount of adjustment that can be carried out on the steering box. Fitting new seals will not correct mechanical wear. So unless it is actually leaking would serve no purpose. If the problem is excessive steering wheel movement, have you checked the intermediate shaft for wear?

My intention is not to rebuild the current sloppy box but the seemingly ok 2nd box I have already on the side. It's that one I'd like to overhall. The spaffed one will be in the scrap metal pile with almost certainty.

If it's not leaking leave it alone. Only place they would tend to leak is drop shaft seal. They are quite complicated, if you don't know what you are doing don't play with it.

I faffed with my old omega box after I replaced it and what a box of "that's buggered it" needless to say it got chucked. Mine sweats from the bottom seal for the moment. But will require a seal or two at some point.
I may just replace it with a refurb unit. At least my old one would be live on for someone else.

With 35 years service at VW, 20 as a master tech before retirement I'm more qualified than pretty much most people and it was originally only a simple question of "where can I buy an overhaul kit from as I'm at a dead end" but thank you all.

Just a typical LandyZone debate with whoever drops in and there bit added. We did learn that you are a person who carries a good bit of knowledge some of us may call upon. ;)

Actually, Ive a good question for you my good man.
A client of mine brought a car for repair, while here his 2.0tfsi throws a camshaft, crankshaft correlation fault and running like crap. It turned up hunting a little and now barely idles..
Without checking for the moment there is a horrible thought lurking...

Don't get upset. There are lots of happy amateurs on here who would try it a screw it up. If you are confident go for it, but i have no idea in this day and age of throw away bits, where you would get the mechanical bits to replace worn out ones. At one time you could just go to stores and get them. Did a reverse gear on the lads Golf GT a few years ago. The parts bloke at main dealers said he would have to order it. I said surely they should be stocked. He said no they send all their gearboxes to a specialist for repair, nobody here would know how to do it. Speaks volumes for present day technicians. :D:D

There are a lot more parts non-repairable nowadays and a lot more parts are right up disposable.. In most cases the cost of repair outways the parts value.. Unfortunately..
And... The training that's needed to repair a lot of electrical stuff isn't available either...

Oh I get it alright.
When vw brought the dsg about we attended a course on how to strip and inspect them etc. I had mine in about 200 pieces on the bench in 30 minutes while we waited for the tutor. I then showed him what did what and where i thought theyd fail from previous experiences with auto boxes. 2 ring mods were made to the later box construction from these observations, but that was VW and before I discovered Range Rovers, so a whole other kettle of frogs.

Yep just so it all kicked off with the Lucas B90 exchange stuff many, many moons ago. We used to strip and repair stuff back in the day, now it's just an exchange unit.

Dsg, damn stupid gearbox.
Tfsi, total ****ing stupid idea...
Hmmm vw, what happened there?? :p

It's a brilliant bit of kit if you need hundreths of a second or like your car farting between gear changes and it really does give you a lot of the best of both auto and manual but hideously wallet killing if you fail to maintain it or if it just dies because its Tuesday.
Please dont even mention VWGATE

You have to go to places like India for that, labour is way too expensive to tear down parts replace and rebuild

Incredulously, a friend asked my son why I was into old Range Rovers. My son replied, "Dad is weird about cars. Remember, he was into old VW's first."
My friend then understood.

I still repair absolutely everything I can on the bench. That's my way, that's how I was taught was the right way. From my kids push bikes to abs pumps to whole car. I've taught my 3 boys this way too, not many 18/19 year olds can weld, rewire, diagnose on anything let alone everything but we digress. I still want kit if I absolutely possibly can get one so I can achieve fit it and forget it.

You would wonder how the people who rebuild mechanical and electrical stuff make a living then. Lots of them about and they are not in India. A lot of cheap crap pattern parts are made there though.
