mornin' all

having trawled through the search function I'm still in the dark regarding my sat nav in my 2001 P38 4.6 Vogue.

When I turn on the ignition I get the land rover intro screen with the various options (on road, off road, set etc.) and all seems fine.

When I input a destination and select route map it show me a map, in orange & blue with the pointer (which I assume is the car) but this bears no relation to where I actually am (often showing the pointer near no road at all).

Even tho' it's old technology by todays standard and I do have a stand alone Tom Tom I would like it to work.

Anyone know whether it likely to be:

1. the disk - mine is dated 2001 and original - according to LR this is the latest version available for the P38 system as it was changed on the L322
2. The unit in the boot - I've taken it out and everything looks fine regarding connectors and no water ingress etc.
3. the GPS receiver - don't know where this is or if it can be replaced but it is obviously receiving a signal as the pointer shows on the screen & moves
4. something I'm doing wrong with the set up - I do have the LR ownes sav nav user guide and think I'm doing everything right

from other posts it appears that the system is the same as the BMW system from the same year and this is apparenly more reliable, are they interchangeable and if so is it just a case of getting a BMW unit & disk and just swapping it over

apologies for the lengthy post but since getting the beastie I'm really impressed and this is one of only 2 niggles that I want to sort (other is low level washer fluid sensor but I'm replacing that on Saturday)

cheers in anticipation :)

Just thinking aloud (as my Rangie hasn't got sat nav)

What makes you think that it's getting a signal?
On your Tom Tom if it doesn't know where it is, because it hasn't yet found a signal, it turns the screen black and white but does the Rangie system do this?

I'd be looking for an aerial feed. If you haven't got a book of words then you could maybe ask one of the breakers where on the car to find all the relevant bits.

Hi

Sounds to me like your sat nav is not getting a GPS signal. you should have a round symbol (looks a bit like a globe) in the top left corner of the map when you have a GPS signal. if you you dont have the symbole, then check the unit in the boot, if you have a mk3 unit the gps cable should be plugged directly into the unit in the boot. If you have a mk2 unit then the gps cabled goes into a receiver under the trim panel next to the boot unit.

The sat nav system take inputs from other vehicle sensors (speed sensor, etc) when there is no GPS signal so the pointer will still move in roughly the direction you are moving.

You can enter your current location into the sat nav, that should update your sat nav to where you are, not great as it does not allow you to say which direction you are going in.

both my p38s as well as my l322 has sat nav the only one thats given trouble is the 2000 model i tried bmw nav computers in it but they were later than 2000 around 2004 and they did not work maybe if you can get a bmw one from the same year it may work i did get one from a rover 75 which did work , if you fit a rover one or bmw you will loose your off road navigation but who uses that anyway. why i had to change it cos i had the white screen of death . however i think the tomtom is far better and more often than not this is what i use
not sure if the computer is the problem with yours and unfortunately diagnostics do not cover sat nav :)

All

thanks for the advice, from what's been said it looks like I'm not getting a GPS signal to the unit.

Time to take the scuttle panel off & check the receiver and then to the boot to have a look at the unit & connections -

I think mine is a CARIN II (that's the owners handbook I got with the truck) does this mean the GPS input is straight to the unit or into the blue receiver box under the o/s trim in the boot??

My P38 is 2000 X reg Vogue, I'm using a standalone tom tom at the moment, but I would like to get the original working, the message I get tells me that its not reading the disc (not original) I will try to clean the lens, but can anyone put me onto where I can get an up to date disc? I will not pay the ludicrous main dealer prices, I just want it to work for the sake of completeness.

afternoon all, time for update.

I removed the head unit from the boot and there is a GPS ariel wire going straight to it which I assume means it's a MK3, even tho' it's CD based and the disk & manual that came with the car refer to it as a CARIN II.

I took it off, cleaned it, re-fitted it and guess what, no change.

Had a look over the web (I'm a member on Rangerover.net as well as here) and I got a really informative PM from an americal chappie telling me how to access the sensor check sub menu (no reference to any of this in the user manual for the sat nav) and I'm getting a message saying "satellite search" on the GPS status sub menu

Now I assume this is telling me that the head unit isn't getting a GPS signal from the antenna - can't be the receiver as my ariel wire goes strainght to the unit, I assume from the antenna under the front scuttle.

Next question, according to RAVE, to get the scuttle panel off, I just need to remove the wiper arms, undo a series of clips & off it comes - is it as easy as that and, as I'll be doing this over the weekend, do I need to get any replacement parts that might break as I take off the panel & is it a good idea to bite the bullet and just get a replacement GPS antenna as well as, apart from a visual inspection I can't test it in any way (unless any of you know different of course)

Phew!!! - anyway over to you

Updated cds are available, just got back from a trip to Denmark, via Holland and Germany. Have 2010/11 cds and it worked very well. My prime Sat Nav is the wife who is Sat next to me and navigates with AA Route Maps! The two sat navs occasionaly have a row over the route and its very amusing. But am thinking of a TomTom or Garmin after my brother in law brought along his TomTom on a trip from Jutland to Copenhagen, it had the option of a very funny Australian chap whos comments helped break up the journey - with three sats navs on the go we got to the destination ok.

Car update, finished putting the engine back together after head gaskets replaced. Finished at 11pm the night before we left. The weather has been rain, rain, rain! Put reconditioned heads on with new followers and a rebuilt rockers. Did Isle of Man to Liverpool, Liverpool to Harwich with lots of breaks to help engine bed in and then overnight boat to Hook of Holland. Then up through Holland, Germany and to the top end of Jutland Denmark. After a week travelled to Copenhagen and a week there. Next Copenhagen to Hook of Holland (14hours) overnight to Harwich and on to London via Cambridge for long weekend with family and then London to Liverpool and ferry to Man. Engine good and car worked faultlesly. Over 2500 miles.
