Ok..not my car but a friend needs help. P38 4.6 auto 1996 i believe.

He's on his way to portugal and reached monaco..says the engine seems to suddenly lose power and slows right down, if he blips the accelerator it kicks in again..done this a few times the last few hours.

He's checked air filter, seems ok, oil ok..

Any help/ideas?

Will pass info on, cheers steve...the engine looked very tidy when he left, its been well looked after by a member from here..he noticed it first on cruise control but its happening when he turns that off too..

He's just called and said when he goes uphill and has to accelerate, the engine sounds rough, if its cruising its ok..apart from occasional loss of revs...but foot down it is like the engine is not running on all cylinders...he filled up not so long back and is thinking he got bad petrol...but surely thatd be constant?

Can't answer the fuel filter question...can he do that himself on a p38? I have no idea about those beasts...

He's gonna get some carb cleaner and throw that in and try and get over to you in a few days steve, hes 1500km away at the mo though..lol..i've sent him your details, his names Jan and hes the size of a mountain.

aye no worries storm, is it not throwing any fault codes up at all? if so we've got hawkeye here too so thats no bother, failing that the mechanic (me dad) will no doubt be able to diagnose it for him

Nope, no fault codes..strange. He's danish but speaks good english. thanks for the help..i hope it gets to you..i sold him the bloody thing but as i say i was just middle man, drove fine the 2 weeks i had it and 2000 miles he's had it...

Ok, having been thru a diagnostics test in monaco and no faults found this p38 is still experiencing power loss and low revs intermittantly...the bloke driving it says the relay box feels very warm!!

Anyone any ideas....:confused::confused:

Could try unplugging the air flow meter? mine is playing up ...... along with the water problems! My symptoms sound similar, unplugged the maf and night and difference, gotta be worth a try, just start it up, pop the bonnet, keep the revs up while unplugging then drive.........

Steve

Thanks Gulf..i'm not a p38 man, i'm trying to help a mate who's driving thru europe, no internet so he calls or texts me..

Where is the maf on the 4.6 auto and is it ok to drive long journeys with it disconnected?
