hi a few weeks back a bought my first p38 4.0 l knowing the head gasket was on its way out (apparently). so yesterday i pulled it apart thinking it would be a pretty strait forward job as soon as i started it didnt look like it was going to be as strait forward as i would like, the cooling system was full of somesort of gaket sealer and the offside head had already been off and replaced with new bolts and new gasket where as the nearside had not been touched looks to still have the original landrover head gasket and bolts. the offside which has already been messed about with i think its cyl 5 which has a clean piston and combustion chamber but no signs of water passing the new gasket so leading me to think either cracked head or porous block anyone had this problem????

yes and slipped liners common, where are you and show us some pics of cleaned block close up of liners

im in grimsby, will post some pics for you tomorrow when ive got some light i run my fingers over the top of the liners and didnt feel like the liners had dropped or anything

this is a close up pic of the liner on no 5cyl doesnt seem to hav moved i even run a brand new stanley blade over it today so try and feel for any impefection but it seems to be flush with the block.

lee what was h/g like, did it have a blow in it?

no thats the thing this side of the block had a new gasket and bolts doesnt look like its been done long the gasket had no signs of blowing. the heads are at the engineers at the mo being pressure checked and skimmed get them back mon so will eliminate them.

i just been through all this with mine, did h/g 3 times, changed water pump rad, therm still overheated, in the end got a good short end engine, should be back on the road this comming week. if you need any help finding one give me a shout. as i said dont waste you money, and time putting it back together it will only do the same.. thats only my oppinoin, hope it works out for you..

yeah thats what i was thinking with the heads and everything off the motor isnt far from coming out now so if the engineers come back to me and say the heads rnt warped or cracked then will be looking for a block. how much did you pay for yours if you dont mind me asking, and are they easy enough to get hold of?

I got my new block from Turner Engineering. Very Knowledgable. I bought the one with Ductile Linings, £2300.00 plus VAT. Google Turner Engineering

I know, But I could also buy another RR that might slip a liner or be porous. Now I know that under the bonnet is full of newness and wont let me down. Its not an easy decision deciding which way to go.

Sorry for nicking your thread, but I am in a simular situation only I have done the head gasket, new rad, stat, water pump etc and still overheats so I am thinking now block..... what sort of cost can I get a block for? I have already spoken to Turner Engineering but I really cant afford £2k just for the parts...... failing that Ill have to scrap it :(

cargo seal up and k seal after-not a miricle cure but If your considering scrapping you have nothing to loose.

will work on minor leaks

if your looking for a quick fix theres some stuff on ebay called irontite aparently meant to be good stuff and a permenant fix if the block isnt too bad so if your motor is still in one piece might be worth throwing a bottle in see if it works thats what i would of done if i hadnt of already stripped my engine down im just not willing to spend the time and a £100 headset to see if it works or not, failing that ive found blocks ranging from £200-£1200 only thing is with a second hand block could do the same thing at any time
