I've read a lot of these threads now about MPG... seams to go from the pocket busting 18mpg to the (I have now idea how)... 31mpg.

I've only had mine now for about 2 months. I do a mixture of town, country roads and dual driving - normally keep it under 70 as I find its just too noisy above that and go from about 22mpg town and country roads to 26 on a run.

I was told by the previous owner that the ECU has been remapped (I can't find a chip) and never driving another one have no comparison. I moved from a 4.6hse and before that a 3.9 classic - and to be honest was expecting a bit of a slug from my dse. But she's ok... so I guess she has been chipped (or I'm just getting old).

I also have Mud Tyres on her and was wondering how much if anything these would detract from the mpg?

It seams a bit pointless constantly chasing mpg gains as I simply enjoy driving the beast but I use the mpg as an indication that the vehicle is running 'sweet' and as good as she can.

I'm currently planning an oil change, filter and fuel filter change as a matter of course and then to keep her in tip top condition.

Hi
'97 2.5 DSE took it on a 110 mile run today ( all country running.). According to computer average 31.3 : at one stage it was over 32. Haven't done a brim to brim test.

some of us live in the country and most people pack in the village

me too, could do with a holland & holland to put the gun in a case in the boot, but then i couldn't have it on the front seat ready for any vermin that i come accross

as per spreadsheets

something i had to do for work years ago just got to be a habit, do it for all the vehicles not just the P38 and great early warning of faults or when they need a service

Having had a load of trouble from using a cleaner that hardened the Pump seals (FIP). On replacing the bits and starting the engine, the message centre is slowly increasing the mpg. But I have no faith in text messages. The pump is controlled by both the ECU and the position of the lower wafer on the pump. Wammers is correct as the spill pipes are one way of losing your better consumption. Now that all the leaks are fixed, I have done a short journey and although the text states 12.5 mpg. I will do my annual remembrance trip and hope things are right. I will trip to the MOT test station and get a read out of the exhaust gases and see if it's better or worse than tested last. On start up the engine is less polluting ('er VAG want a few pointers) than before, as it emitted black smoke at times. It runs smoother than before and tick over is stable. Using the Evo 2 I can adjust that lower. if need be. Slowly and surely give me about a decade, I'll sort the car out. But having good feedback helps. It's a great shame the P38 wasn't tried and tested as the Classic, I have grown to like it, but it hasn't bonded with me yet. Unless it's finally worked out that it has a Vehicle Mechanic as a driver.

Hardly any Cockneys anyway, too bloody expensive to live in London, unless those Bankers want to be called Cockneys - then even I could hate them, my Ol' China. Glad to get back to Lincolnshire.
