i had a message flash up today transfer box in neutral, and the mileage display has dimmed on the right hand side about half way,so one half is clear the other dimmed,is this an lcd fault, and what is going on with the transfer box,the switch light is out,(the one next to the hazard switch)

Are you saying these both happened at the same time? The mileage display dimming is usually just a backlight bulb gone - mine's the same. Ain't got round to doing it yet.
Is your transfer box in neutral or just showing it is? Normally, the only way of getting it in neutral is by inserting a fuse in the BeCM fusebox under the drivers seat - I forget which one. You haven't been checking fuses at some time and put one in the wrong slot by any chance? Stupid question I know but has to be asked:rolleyes:

yep these both happened at the same time,i have since had a reset and the transfer message has gone,i have not touched any fuses, but i was in a wet field at the time and nearly caught me out as the back broke away.
i thought it was a bulb, but wasn't sure, that is good news, the transfer message is a bit of a worry tho.

and i now cannot switch on low range, the switch does not even light up.

I can't remember when I had the manual doosel whether it flashed when it was in the process of selecting Lo Range or whether it just lit up when Lo Range was actually engaged. Do you get any error messages on the dash such as 'Select Neutral'? Some models I believe also had a switch operated by the clutch pedal.
The switch goes to the Transfer Box ECU. This is fed by 2 fuses - F4 & F6 (The indicator light conversly is fed from the BeCM). It sounds very much like the Transfer Box ECU playing up.
