Ive got a 4.6 p38 with single point lpg. Im not happy 100% with it and am wondering what other engines i could poss replace it with? I used to have an old v8 auto classic come into me which had had a 2.8 isuzu trooper engine put in it. It used the RR auto box still, is this an option in the p38 does anyone know? If not any other engines that are known to fit? (Diesel is the wayi m thinking of going) Was wondering about the 3.1 isuzu lump? or maybe a shogun lump? I dont mind a challenge!

if its any help,i'm sure the 3.5, 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6 all fit the same box! so anything that fits the old un should fit the new one! but, and heres the problem. the ecu's on the 4.6 wont fit anything but the 4.6 and 4.0. the heads are interchangeable between the 4.0 and 4.6 but i think the 3.9 block has a different length crank nose as does the 3.5, shorter i believe.

if you can sort the electrikery then anything is possible!

A 4cyl diesel spoils the spirit of a P38,sell it and buy one with the BMW 6 cyl diesel. Its not that good, but its better than a tractor engine.I used to do quite a bit with P38's with Mitsi 2.8 engines and one with a mazda 3.5 slt engine. The Mazda was a far better conversion as it had more go and was a better,(Tidier) job altogether, but it was a manual box and ate clutches. The Mitsubishi Pajero ones were horrible, the sump rubbed the front axle and it was like sitting on a jackhammer when idling at junctions etc.

Yep,it was a laminated sump, could be sorted, plus sort out the engine mounts to avoid the jackhammer vibration and fix the lack of mid range/top end poke and it would be sorted.
Or you could buy a V8 -pref a late one, stick a decent sequential gas kit on it and enjoy.

Quite, thats why I wish Honda had been given a chance to sort out LR before BMW got hold of them, and then Ford wandered in and sha- in the bowl.......

I've been wondering recently how easy it would be to fit a modern 4 cylinder diesel into the space that is currently occupied by the unpowerfull, uneconomic 2.5TD boat anchor Land Rover originally put in there.

I smoked around in both a new Focus and a new Avensis for week each a while ago. I was very impressed with the powerplants in both. Pity I couldn't say the same for the diesel Astra SRI that I rented for a week.

Regarding the P38..... What about the PSA / Ford 2.7 TDV6 as found in the Disco3?

Ive been thinking about the transit 2.4 tdci lump? i believe this is now fitted to the defenders? I really dont want the bmw lump as ive never liked it or trusted it that much.
Obviously an older engine is gonna be easier as its not likely to be controlled by to many electronics. I love the v8 dont get me wrong but im not happy with this one really? not really sure why? it just dont seem right and i dont trust it. Ill keep looking for engine ideas and see what comes up.
