Hello Fellas (& Gals too!),
I'm looking for some guidance with earthing my newly installed foglights on my '96 rangie. I had the becm programmed to recognise the installation, but the main stealer said that I would need to earth the lights to get them to work....they wanted over a ton to do this for me, so I thought I'd tackle the job myself after a bit of friendly advice from you. They said there are brown & yellow wires that need to be run to somewhere!!??!!...can any of you kind eckspurts tell me what and where to connect to???....I'm not too fond of wires and looms and sparks and stuff, but I'm ok with a pair of pliers and a spanner!!
All suggestions and advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,

try them on the body of the car, depending where they are. if you can get to the end of the cables just touch em on the body see if they work!

The connectors are there already, should be no need no need to do any wiring if you buy OEM lights and dash switch.
I piggybacked onto the foglight connectors for wiring up LED flashers (orange construction ones, not bling!) on my 98my DSE Auto (can't fit fog lights due to auto oil cooler) no problem. I get a blown bulb warning everytime I turn them on but they work perfectly.

I fitted 2001 spec fogs to my 1995 DSE with a proper switch, had to cut off the original plugs off due to them being to badly corroded but no other probs didn't have to anything done to he becm.

Thanks for your input Guys....I installed these lights myself...the wires were already there, and I bought a switch from landrover...they didn't work at that stage and the local stealer told me I had to get the becm programmed to recognise the installation...I had this done with them for 60 quid as they had the computer necessary to do this, but they still did not work!! when I collected they said I would need to have them earthed, but this would cost about 120 quid, but that it was a fairly easy job....they were none too helpful when I said I would do it myself!!....I asked what I should do, but they didn't offer any useful advice and didn't seem to want to know when I didn't give them the job.

All I need to know is where would be the best place to run an earth wire from & to, and will I need to earth each light individually? Is it just a case of finding a nearby bolt on the chassis and attaching a connector to this from the lights or will I have to run a wire back to the fusebox or somewhere? The stealer said something about "running a cable" and that it would take about an hour or two!....that doesn't seem straightforward to me! I'm a bit concerned because the rangie is quite complex electrically, and I don't want to ferk anything up by fiddling with the wrong wires...I may end up melting the loom or installing a multitude of extra BLEEPS!!....you know wot the bluddy things are like!!

My rangie is a DSE, and although its a diesel, I have never had any problems with the g/box oil cooler in the 3years I have had her...there were blanks in the f/bumper before I fitted the fogs, so there should be no difference with cooling issues now.

id av thort if they is genuine lights theyd be earthed thru the existing plugs? av the dealers made a balls up of enabling em?

The wiring diagrams in RAVE should enable you to check all the wiring is there and is going to the correct place.

Have you checked all options, i.e. make sure sidelights or headlights are on, as I think it can be set-up to work as driving lights too, but I may have dreamed that...

If the connectors are there it should just be a matter of connecting the 2 wires from the lamp to the 2 wires of the connector. However, as it's a diesel which is not supposed to have a fog light obscuring the autobox oilcooler, it's possibe there is no loom or connectors. Would Landrover economise by useing a different loom?

I reckon the dealer was trying to take you for a ride.

That would probably cost them more.

The connector for the clutch pedal cruise control jobbie is present on my 4.6 auto so I would guess just one loom. Unless the fog light harness is a seperately pluggable innable bit mebbe.

Guy

My DSE Auto had the two plugs sitting there with the connector for the dash switch present also, it was only a matter of hooking it all up and turning it on in the BECM.

It will be better if you take pictures of what you have so everybody can see what you're talking about. If it just a matter of earth, you can use any bolt in the chassis.

Hi! Fellas....They Are Now Working!!....Thanks for all your helpful suggestions!!....It took me 20mins and half a metre of cable and a few crimped connectors to run the earth to the nearest chassis bolt. Just goes to show what the main stealers charge for a 20min job...120 quid indeed!....and they would have probably done it a lot quicker than me too!
No strange beeps or warning signals from the on-board robot as yet....I hold my breath!
Thanks Again All,

Particularly when it should not be required

The black wire from the OEM connector (C188 Right, C159 Left) goes to ground  and the Red/Yellow to the BECM. So how can they quote you for some wiring that should not need to be done.

Well done on sorting it yourself anyway ;)

just had the same problem with fog lights, also had to run extra earth wire from them to bolt on body.the car did not have fogs on when I bought it but fitted them myself easy enough untill switching on lit up pn dash and 13/14 volts at plug behind light but did not work after reading on this site took advise to earth this did trick. (after visit to land rover guy who told me my lights were turned on already at brain. did not charge me :) )
