The drivers side wing mirror on my P38 seems to have a mind of it's own and isn't re - setting after drive is selected etc.

Is this a common problem, easily fixed or cheaply replaced?

Cheers all.

By "re-setting", do you mean returning to position after dipping for reverse?

If so, this seems to be fairly common. My passenger mirror does the same. Most folks seem to just disable the dipping function, but I'm determined to fix mine one day...

My drivers door mirror has just started doing this..( or stopped doing it which ever way you look at it)...hence my thread on how to remove the glass.....I need to check everything behind the mirror to see if it is ok....dips ok, then does not reset to original position, but then will dip again when reverse so I end up looking a the floor if I am manouvering.....

Let us know if you find anything! It's on my list of things to do, but It's not very high on my list of jobs.

I still think it's a bad connection somewhere.

Have you tried just pressing the appropriate memory button on the seat? Apparently that sometimes makes the mirror go back to the right position.

OK......Strange......Just went out and put the car into reverse....the wing mirror dipped as expected. put into Drive and nothing, so pressed memory 1 and the wing mirror returned to normal......alll well and good..........however when I then put the car back into reverse, the mirror went UP and not down..........WTF? I had a little look behind the mirror and there are two wires with a little block on them that is not attached to anything ( green wire & Blue/brown wire) anyone know where/if this is meant to be attached?

Hi one of my mirrors dipped didn't come back
Up properly. All fixed now work great
I air dusted behind them a straw fitted
On can to get behind well
Then wd40 in same way. Left it for
20min then moved mirror
Up down sideways etc etc a few times
Works now x hope of help

I trust you have set the mirrors up, in both drive and reverse, then programmed to memory button one or two?, also if you use key fob one it may not sync with memory button two on seat etc !

My passenger mirror is/was possessed too. However I have a cunning solution. Seeing as there's only me driving my Rangey (my Wife says it's smelly and isn't very keen) I make full use of the memory settings. It's a 3 stage solution so stay with me here.

1) Disable the auto-dip. It's rubbish and works sporadically, if you are lucky. Usually the mirror doesn't return to the same spot.

2) Set memory position 1 to "normal". i.e. your usual driving position.

3) Set memory position 2 to be perfect when reversing.

When I'm driving I use position 1. When reversing I just hit position 2. Sorted. That is of course until the damned thing decides it can't remember position 1 or 2 any more, which probably isn't far away. Even worse it will merge the two into some sort of hideous Frankenstein mirror arrangement. It's an old car so a slight dose of memory loss isn't that unusual as we all know. :D

Mines just started doing this now too. How do I disable the auto dip function?

Anyone found the proper fault in it yet by any chance?

I wish someone would! My drivers one works perfectly, but my passenger one sometimes dips (sometimes doesn't) and rarely comes back up again. I find it a really useful feature, but is typically LR in the reliability front.

Someone did suggest cleaning it out with compressed air and then lots of WD40 which seemed to fix theirs, but didn't do anything for mine.

Had a good nosy online, and just found this, its all set with the seat position memory:

"Start off with your normal position for the mirror, ign on and in reverse, adjust mirror to where you want it when reversing, press memory seat and either button 1 or 2. To disable the function, ign on and in reverse, press and hold memory seat for 2 seconds - should then be a message in the dash saying 'mirror dip off'. To re-enable - same again. "

I'm guessing you can set positions for the mirror for both drive and reverse then

Will try this tonight and let you know

Mine accepts the positions and then carries on as before. Unless I disable them.

Same prob here....Driver side works fine, passenger side dips but doesn't come back up. I just set the dip position and driving position to the same level until I can get chance to have a proper look at it.

My drivers side mirror does this, passenger one is fine though.....I have just disabled the function, however the 'top tip' about setting driver 1 & driver 2 is very clever.......

I have just treated myself to a FAULTMATE EXTREME, once familiar with it I will see if any of the functionallity can be used in conjuction with 'Eye Ball Mk 1' and a screwdriver and narrow done where the problem lies. If I get anywhere I will let you all know.....

Ok tried the seat memory thing last night and seems to have worked, mirror returned to the right position every time!:)

I'm interested to know how the mirror knows it's position. Does it use stepper motors, or does the BECM just use timed motor bursts?

I have a feeling my drivers seat loses it's backrest setting too and I suspect that probably uses the same method to work out the position. After the bird's been driving it, the backrest seems to just go to full recline. I'm sure I don't usually drive with it that far back and always have to adjust it again and re-store the setting.

Perhaps I should test the passenger mirror dipping on position 2 as the seat certainly works ok on that one...
