P38 DSE Injection Pump Timing Woes

Hi Guys,

Hope everyone is well and most importantly safe during these difficult times?

Ive recently received my diesel injection pump back from a complete overhaul from diesel bob, and on fitting i am seriously struggling with setting the lift timing.

Following everything on Rave to set the fuel timing, im seeing a lift reading of 0.10mm, which when i move the pump on its axis i can only achieve a range of lift between 0.00 and 0.30mm max?

I have removed the pump and refitted, just incase i hadnt aligned the woodruff key, but all is well there too?

Anyone have any ideas? Im pretty much all out, unless the actual timing chain may have jumped causing these issues?

Any help would be super appreciated....thanks guys!
 
Im 99% certain....

When i find the lowest point on the dti, i set the gauge to zero, and then continuing to crank the engine round i can fit the pin in place at zero and 0.10mm. i tried many times to find another location further on, but unless im doing something wrong there wasn't another hole i could find.

You crank the engine round clockwise only to fit the pin, you fit the pin to lock the engine with cam lobes vertical on #1 cylinder, once the pin is in place it stays there until you are finished. FIP should go in with the woodruff key vertical, then you preload the dial gauge and set to zero and move the pump to get 0.95, the last movement of the FIP must always be towards the engine..
@wammers could give more detail, I always have to look up the details in RAVE.
 
I think the 1st cam lobe being vertical is the starting point, as a guide to being at TDC at approximately 90 degrees further round.

Its then that the pin sits in place, until the adjustments are made.

I have to admit ive questioned myself a fair bit through this lol.

Correct, but once the pin is in place, there is no more cranking.

My struggle is when i put the pin in place, i am only seeing a reading of 0.10mm lift at TDC.

I can only obtain minimal movement of around 0.30mm lift in total, back from 0.10mm to zero, and forwards upto 0.30mm maximum, as the elongated mounting slots of pump hit the mounting studs at far left and far right.

It sounds like you are not using the Dial gauge correctly.
You really need @wammers to wake up as he's the expert on FIP timing.
 
Gavin you will have to read through the other recent thread and follow it. I am not going through all that again. If all else is set up correctly maybe as someone has already said, you are not applying the DTI properly. Moving the pump along the adjustment slot from end to end should produce far more movement than you are getting.
 
What are the last few digits of the number on your FIP

Take a pic so we can see what you have

If you read my thread you will see starting point is 90 degrees before top dead centre on compression stroke.
TDC was used with Lucas as he was fitting new chains - this is different
No the 90 degrees before TDC is only used to load DTI to check pump timing with the pump locked in place. When fitting a new pump the engine should be locked at TDC number one firing when the old pump is removed and not until the new pump is fitted and timed should the pin be removed. Also the pump timing lift on cam should be set at 0.90 mm with old chains fitted.

No problem Wammers, I appreciate this may have been covered on a few occasions now - I will have a good read through, and double check everything again.

I'm working late shifts at the moment, but I'll try and take a pic when I finish work on one of my evenings this week - I don't finish until 8pm this week so my play time is pretty much nil :( .

Op did you use the right sprocket holder , that didn’t move, when taking pump off?

This was the tool that I used to remove the pump.....as far as I know nothing moved when I took the pump off, and all was locked in place at TDC.
