 P38 Diesel wont rev past 3500 rpm???
Hey guys and galls, just joined, what a source of knowlege this forum is... sooo cool.

Anyway, I have a 97 P38 with the stock BMW diesel, it has suddenly decided it wont rev past 3500-4000 rpm when I kick down, but revs freely @ stand still.
I am thinking it could be a sensor putting the ECU on safe mode...???

Any of you guys hear of this before?

Kind regards Jay--Jay

Gunged up intercooler or split turbo pipes sapping power:confused:

Thanks guys, sound thinking but!!!

Fuel filter is new, 2000 mile ago...
Intercooler was flushed when I fitted a new oil cooler 2000 mile ago, also turbo pipes are pressurising when the engine is reved???

If there was a sensr fault serious enough to cause the ECU to cut revs/power you should expect to get a fault message. Given that engine revs fine at standstill but not in drive I would look more towards either physical gearbox fault or gearbox ECU fault.

Guys for clarity...

Car runs fine... just wont rev over 3500-4000 rpm (on kick down only), no fault messages what so ever...???

Any ideas ??? Jay

If engine revs freely at rest but will not rev under load (on kick down)
check MAP sensor hose is intact (no leaks). Diagnostics may show faulty MAP sensor.

hi,I have checked electrics, changed turbo pipes and fuel filter. Then I looked at the air filter...it had obviously got wet and solidified the dirt in paper elements. Changed that and car now runs as it should..revs freely. Wish I had checked that first but never mind at least others will start there

To be honest though that would have been first thing to check. Before coming on here. Remember the words of the song."Let's start at the very begining, it's a very good place to start".:D:D:D
