P38 Diesel wont rev past 3500 rpm???

I have a 97 P38 with the stock BMW diesel, it has suddenly decided it wont rev past 3500-4000 rpm when I kick down, but revs freely @ stand still.
Also the box dosent change up until I have lifted my food of the accelerator (more than the usual ammount).
I am thinking it could be a sensor putting the ECU on safe mode...???

All turbo pipe work is good, new fuel filter fitted, no fault showing on dash!
Other than this the car runs fine???

Any of you guys hear of this before?

Kind regards Jay--Jay

Dear all,

I have had the fault codes read... nothin showing at all.
Apparently the pump dwell is slightly out, this is controlled electronicaly.

Has anyone had this problem before?
Could it be the DCU in the bosch injector pump?

At this point I am looking for someone who has come accross the problem and solved it.

Thanks Jay

Had a similar problem with TD5 Def and it turned out to be a collapsing turbo pipe. Don"t assume just because they look ok they are ok as under load and full turbo pressure they are under serious strain and I cant imagine that you are able to check them at this time. Mine had almost delaminated internally from oil contamination but looked fine externally and took loads of dickin around to find this and it was trial and error in the end. Ambient temperature here kills anything rubber so this may be unlikely in UK. Other things I would be looking at are blocked EGR valve (if pturdy8 has one) intercooler full of oil, air flow meter or electrical fault which you have checked. good luck.
