Hi all,

Not a big issue, but i'e noticed over my 2 months of P38 Diesel auto ownership that it always idles at 950rpm. Doesn't matter what gear - park, drive, neutral, and same with aircon on or off.

Rave says it should be 750rpm +/- 50 so looks like mine is about 150rpm above top tolerance.

Any ideas as to why it would idle faster than it's supposed to, and is anyone else's P38 diesel auto idling at that speed ?

Ta, Rick.

Try adjusting the "return Stop" on the Acc cable (probs just slipped abit!)

It's possibly all that salt in your eyes Keith. Oh' i do like to be beside the sea side.:D:D:D

More like seagull **** Tony, spent a good 3 hours this mornin washin it .. went out at 4 Pm to go to the Docs & the damn seagulls have **** ...It started at the bonnet & went right over the windscreen & down the drivin door!!!!

And then the damned Pensioners next door had some workmen in to "Adjust" their paving stones & the Fookers began by getting out their ENORMOUS grinder & cutting lumps off the pavin stones

RESULT = Looks lika I parked it next to that blasted Volcano in Iceland fer a week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm that's a possibility. Where would I look, isvit going to be in the ecu box?

If its a timed module it will be in some sort of box that might be attached to the battery / ecu box with possibly two sets of leads going into it, it should be obvious.

If it's a C'n'C (Cheap and Cheerful) one the look at post # 49 here:http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/diesel-hot-starting-fault-p38-21995-5.html

This will tell you what your're looking for.

Hope that helps

on high mileage bmw's they usually raise the idle speed to mask a failing pump, but *most* of the pumps in the p38's are the late model that are slightly less likely to fail in that aspect

Cool, thanks for the replies i'll have a look when I get home. I'd hoped that buying a 2001 with 80k miles on the clock would give me a while before the hot start issue reared it's head. Will be interesting to see if someone has already done it.

Keep you posted :)
