Evening all im new to the site and this is my first post been in the landrover scene for many many years but have just aquired a p38 rangerover crash damaged im currently in the process or repairing it.

Now the airbags have deployed so ive replaced them along with a new airbag ecu but im sure ill need new crash sensors too? so my question is where exctly are they located?? i read somewhere behind the headlights but i cant find anything, any help would be much appreciated.

Behind the drivers side headlight, yellow box, not sure, but there might be one on the passenger side too. The crash sensor latches in a crash, but I have read that they can be re-set. If your car is the early one without the side airbags, I can supply replacement sensor/s.

yes it is a 1998 with just dash and steering wheel airbags. what is the cost inc postage, regards Mike

Right abit of an update after datatek sending me photos of their location. ( much aprechiated) but I certainly don't have any crash sensors it that location nor have they been or any wiring loom for them either.

Is there any other location they could be or maybe I don't have any. Mines a 1998 2.5 dt cheers guys

The photo's are from a 96, they are in the same place on my 00. The wiring loom is in yellow tube. Have you got the rest of the loom in place to the airbags in the steering wheel and glove box area?
If the car has been in a front end shunt, could be that the looms have been pushed back to the bulkhead to avoid damage when welding etc.
Still trying to get the rusted bolts out, left them soaking with degrippant.

Right just had another look, on the drivers side the loom turns behind the battery box and goes through the inner wing panel into the wheel arch above the plastic wheel arch liner. Same on the passenger side, it goes under the EAS box and through the inner wing. Maybe the looms are just sitting in the wheel arch on the plastic liner.

Ive just been out for another look and there certainly is nothing there. it only had a bump on the pass front side drivers side is complete there are no cables in a yellow plastic wrap and my front arch liners arnt in at the minute anyhow from it been on the jig and i can clearly say they is no wiring loom for them, but yes the wiring is there in the dash / steering wheel as i have replaced those bags.

Right chaps after speaking to a specilist today 'emmotts of colne' I now have the issue sorted mine did infact not have any sensors mounted behind the headlights and after been told a step by step process on how to fit it all I can now say its all in and working and the srs light isn't on either. So many thanks and also to datatek for all your help.

Unplugging/plugging in anything to do with the SRS, unless the battery is disconnected and the system has been given time to dicharge, is not a good idea. Unless you like the idea of balloons being blown up in your face in fractions of a second.

I disconnected the battery allowed 30 mins for the system to discharge before touching anything. Once that time had lapsed I removed/replaced the airbags and ecu. I was then instructed to hold the positive and negative battery wires together for 60 seconds(by a specialist) this helps remove any gremlins in the system once complete refit the battery but it has to be fully charged holding 12v+ no less and start the vehicle it's did it's srs check and the light went out. Obviously this is what I did and if you follow it I hold no responsibility if you get a face full of airbag.

Good man. But some do come on here and propose unplugging and re conecting SRS linked stuff without diconnecting battery. It is not a very sensible thing to do. :):)

Never unplug that about which you have no knowledge:( You will need diagnostics to clear the fault:eek:

I have the diagnostics to clear the fault , which is why i wasent botherd about unplugging it, but the bugger wont communicate , (hawkeye + grey adaptor)
£350 and it wont do the only thing i need it to,
I guess i will have to test it on another p38 before i send it back !
Mind u it got rid of the pesky immobiliser problems,

Have you had it on diagnostics? That would tell you where the fault is. You cannot just bypass the airbags, a precise resistance value is required. It's unlikely to be a failed crash sensor.

I purchased the proper electrical parts to do the bypass info on this site the crash sensors are old but no damage to front of car I bought the car with this fault on it along with 3 other faults this is the last fault I have to fix.i have replaced the ECU as well the ECU that was in the car had like a brown colour over it.not new though
