well driving yesterday not too fast luckily the steering disconnected ond i drifted in the the left and hit a ditch causing some damage to my P38.

was fairly gutted at the time, new head light, indicator, front bumper, wing bonnet, hurricane alloy wheel, general grabber tyre, and worst of all from the shunt the front diff poked a hole in the oil sump! delighted!! luckily i have a donor in the driveway and had the body panels stripped off luckily its also a 2.5 DSE in Java Black so should just bolt back on and same with the sump.

so the problem that happened, the steering rod from where the steering wheel pops through the fire wall, there is a knuckle that connects on to it, that disconnected while i was driving

so had complete steering loss and basically free wheeled in to a ditch, so maybe just a point to most lads to check that connection on there next service. if i was any kind of a fast road and doing 60+mph i may have rolled it in a ditch, doest bare thinking about. anyway i included some pics so enjoy the carnage and the beginning of it being rebuilt again. new alloy arrives on friday tyre in 2 weeks cos there out of stock so other than that seems i should be back on the road by the weekend.

Stay safe lads!!

First things first Garrett....Pleased no-one was hurt.

Your also lucky that you happen to have a readily available supply of parts to hand.

Must say it's the first time I have heard of the joint coming loose, good point about checking it now and again.

do you think it could have been the bloody great big red arrow that caused it???

i'm off to pull the arrow outa mine...............................

:rolly: :behindsofa:

Glad you weren't hurt!!! Shame about your Rangie she looked like a beauty!
Still you've made good ground on it already!!!

Glad you're OK, but shame about the car! At least you had a spare ready? You didn't hang around in getting it sorted did ya?!

You didn't hang around in getting it sorted did ya?!

i was lying in bed at 5am this morning staring at the ceiling going through in my head about what had to be done today..... it was such a kick in the teeth when it happened i figured the only way it would make me fell any better was if i got started on it straight away.

will update with more pics tomorrow if i get anything done.

I could be talking bollocks, but I seem to remember a red clip as service item on steering column on one of the 4x4 I've worked on.

As I can't remember column steering shaft-is it similar setup to defender or not?
