I could be talking bollocks, but I seem to remember a red clip as service item on steering column on one of the 4x4 I've worked on.

As I can't remember column steering shaft-is it similar setup to defender or not?

might be a wee bit o' difference...

You are right there is a red clip and it's in the serice schedule to check it.

Glad you are OK P 38 Ireland, that looks like a heavy impact, check the panhard rod and track rod are on bent, maybe the drag link too. Did it not fire any airbags? A 15mph slip on ice into a ditch triggered a side airbag on mine which blew the seat squab to bits:mad: It also bent the rear panhard rod although there was no damage to the wheels.

no all airbags were fine. and im in a 2000 reg so have side airbags too, the mechanic looked under it and so far he's happy with the drag links and track rod ends.

I'm amazed no airbags fired, maybe I was just unlucky. The side airbags are useless, just destroy the seat. I have disconnected the one that did not fire in case that one decides to go and destroy the other seat.

quick update, finished mocking up the panels and fixed them in place. the passenger headlight, trim and indicator are off my V8 which is a pre 1999 no there only in to see if everything would git back in. expecting the parts over the next few days.

the sump should be fitted tomorrow then should be back on the road. cant wait!

Hi Mate, glad you are Okay, this is going to bring back bad memories for me now, before my P38 i had a disco 3.9 300 series, came back from the midlands with four mates and towing a big trailer with lots of stuff on, late at night from Exeter traveling aprox 70/80 mph, dropped off trailer, went home, came out the next day drove off and got less than 10 ft no steering, rolled back outside the house and had a look underneath, the arm from the steering box was touching the drag link arm. Went to local LR parts supplier and they had never heard of it happening, when i removed the box and pulled out the shaft i could see there was a flaw in the casting, the disco had never been off road in it's life apart from crossing a field or two. I will be checking mine out in the morning before i go anywhere, thanks for letting us know.

Looking good!!! ;););)

Well just a quick update, got the head lights in and the bumper on, little fiddleing round with the wing alignment still to do but the sump was welded and no bad noised from the big eng. luckily when it crashed i pulled the key straight away so it was off before the oil drained out. just waiting on the clear lens for the to arrive really. new wheel arrived today so couple hrs at it tomorrow and i think it should be back on the road. oh and to tighten up the steering etc......!

the end of the steering wheel that comes through the fire wall, the knuckle joint that has i think a 10mm bolt in it came loose and released the steering wheel.

have a look at my original post on this thread and you will see the diagram i made.

Think you will find it's 8mm. Anyway unless you have upset someone it is likely it has been just fingered in by someone and never tightened. Part of the pre-delivery check is to ensure all steering bolts are secure. It may well have been like that from new. I have found loose bolts on occasion. Once tightened properly these bolts never come undone.

so its the bolt that clamps the splines?

Yes clamps the splines and fits into a undercut on the shaft. Reasonably fool proof. If it's tightened up that is. Very little stress on it but will work loose by steering action as the knuckle wobbles on splines if not tight.
