p38 Brake vacuum pump???

hi,

I think my brake vacuum pump has just retired itself due to me forgetting to check the oil level in the last year, dipped it and not a speck of oil in sight.

The symptoms are no brakes but firm pedal. No signs of any brake fluid leaking.

If it is the vac pump could someone please inform me as to where to find this slippery little sucker on the engine please so I can replace.

97 Range Rover p38 2.5 DT

There is no vacuum pump for the brakes on a P38. ABS pump is in engine bay at drivers side and is electric. Only vac pump on a P38 is for EGR in front of cam cover and will not be fitted to your vehicle. If it's the engine oil you have not dipped for a year stay in touch, you may need this forum shortly.

If there is no pump why would there be a part for it?

And if its not what you say it is what else could it be? ABS pump?
 
Look at relay 17 ABS pump relay and MF (master fuse) 3. 40 amp. The large ones in a line to inside front of fuse box.
 
Ive just found the pump on the my engine, which is at the front. One of the pipes is cracked in between the pump and servo. Quick fix, replace pipe to my non existent vac pump:eek:

Servo!! What servo, P38s don't have vacuum brake servos. Unless you have one that's been butchered. The vac pump on the front of the cam cover on a P38 is for the EGR and the pipe from it should go to the EGR servo valve at the rear of the engine bay passenger side. Your year should not have EGR.
 
Would be very interested in seeing a photograph of your engine bay please. First of all the vacumm pump fitted for EGR is nowhere near good enough to run brakes from. If someone has butchered the ABS and fitted a vac servo do you not have strange lights flashing at you from dashboard all day? NO P38 from inception has had a vacuum brake servo. All are fitted with an electric ABS pressure pump and brake modulator.

I am being more patient than is normal for me today. Look down the drivers side inner wing and do you see a electric ABS pump, with what looks like a ball on top of it?
 
I see, does it switch off (or whatever it does) when the engine gets warm so you're only adding cold air?

Reason for asking is I saw someone selling some device on Ebay that claimed to bypass the EGR and improve the performance of the turbo. If the EGR only worked when engine was cold there would seem little point by passing it given the time the engine takes to warm up.
