p38 auto cuts out when putting it into gear

hi could anyone enlighten me as to why my 1999 p38 auto cuts out when changing from park into reverse or basically changing from park into any gear, it does the same when coming to a stop from driving . any help much appreciated nige008

Petrol ,diesel ?

If it's a diesel quantity control servo feedback pot. If it's a petrol idle air control valve.
