Hi, finally got mine running but it now has an oil leak ( atf) from the bell housing. looking at Rave it seems to me that an oil seal has gone, now the ? is are these boxes and transfer box in the realms of a competent diy mechanic to remove. I have a 2.5t engine crane and a 2.5 trolley jack,I have done clutches on my own in our 300tdi disco's. Are there any things I should be on the lookout for if tackling this excercise, many thanks.

For the DIY Mechanic....maybe....

For the serious DIY Mechanic.....good chances....

Don't do it on your own....the Autobox is fairly large and heavy, but the transfer box is very heavy, if the TB and the AB are removed together, that is some serious amount of metal to hulk around on yer own....

Invite some friends round with bribes of beer and a good, hearty dinner afterwards and you'll be a good way there...!!!

with an engine crane ,hired in necessary removing gear box with t/ box complete is easiest way are you sure its coming out of bell housing and not running down from cooler pipes

Fairly sure, but by the sounds of your reply you think different, do I assume they dont leak from this area that often?

auto boxes dont normally leak much at all ,though it is possible ,pipes often do ,and front seal leaking in bell housing is often a sign that t/c drive plate ,or bolts etc need looking at

Hi, guys dried box off weekend and then ran car round block oil is definately coming out of the drain plug hole in the bell housing so I am assuming the oil seal in the g/box has gone, ?is do I have to totally remove the boxes to replace this or is it possible to do it in situ? thanks for reply's

box needs to come out completely, oil pump housing is sealed with o ring this can leak as well as seal ,remember t/c stays with box when refitting

Be very carefull when refitting box to engine, box pump drives have been known to break. Also be aware of torque converter has oil inside, just take your time and be clean and methodical.

That is why you always remove convertor with box and fit it with box.

Hi, box is out t/c with it, where is this oil pump you have mentioned, at this moment I cant see any damage but have onlu just got it out and into the garage for inspection , any help / ideas input welcome.

when you pull out t/c from bell housing you will see cast iron housing with seal in tube this is pump housing to get to actual pump stand gear box on end with bell housing upwards undo all bolts with 17mm socket and pull bell housing off it may come off with pump housing plate ,on underside of pump is bolts 11mm socket or 7/16 undo but leave 2 with some thread still tap these bolts pump will seperate ,check bush in tube as well as seal as this supports t/c

Hi, update, removed as suggested t/box first then g/box, found no tell tale marks so investigated, oi seal appers ok no score marks on t/c bush gently pressurised the t/c no holes showing up , so new oil seal and o rings ordered new bush fitted fingers crossed.
