looking to get a p38 just after a bit of info in the differance between the 4.0 and 4.6 like better mpg more reliable etc etc hope some one can help thanks

94mm bore on both and both slip liners, BCEM issues, wireless receiver issues, EAS issues etc

ok will have alook out for one are they 6 cylinder or 5 any thing to look out for got about 2.5k to which aint bad just before crimbo but dont tell the mrs

Datatek is biased against petrol. diesels have just as many problems although different. If you want a reliable car that won't go wrong .......look elsewhere

4.6 have more toys than the 4.0. H S E v's S E spec. And all the same things go wrong with all of them, petrol or diesel! Like the man said not the most reliable car. But still love em though!

I think a Range Rover isn't quite complete unless it has a V8. Plus as other posters have said, the diesel suffers from lots of problems as well.

LPG'd V8's offer similar fuel economy... be prepared for slipped liners, Headgasket failures though (unless you can find one thats already been top hat linered).

Oh come on chaps, stop trying to scare the **** out of the poor fella, any second hand car you are going to get is going to have issues, all my cars go through what I call the teething phase, all sorts of little niggles and jiggles, but once sorted out, they drive pretty well. And I always factor that cost in when buying one and as said pay up a little more and buy a decent one in the first place. Don't cheap out and buy a banger and then complain its shyte.

If you keep it well maintained and do preventive maintenance rather than wait for crap to break. The run pretty reliably.

The good things about Landies is ( atleast the older ones ) is they are pretty simple to work on and fix on your own, parts are plenty and forums like these make it less painful to own one.

I also think they get an extra bad rap for slipped liners and HGs. They do go, but in majority of the cases there are a ton of other causes that lead to major breakdown.

Biggest of all if you like your Luxury Cruise Liners, nothing beats a Range Rover, having driven new Cayennes, X5s, MLs, GLs, Escalades etc etc Range Rover still comes out on top in drive feel and that Captains deck visibility.

As for what engine, go for the V8 as said before Range Rovers were built with V8s in mind from day one and any other motor does not do it justice, and you will always keep on wondering, how would it be if I would have bought a proper range rover and not this oil burning tractor.

Plus how ****ty it is to open the hood and see BMW Diesel written on your motor ! :D

Well said Desertdude!!!

But, do not ignore the warnings of the others on this thread.

Yep agree here and if you are details crazy like me you will spend a lot of money to fix it... So far I have spent more money on making it right than when I purchased it... But I love this car so much.

If you only have £2.5K to spend you are unlikely to find a good diesel at that price. V8's are much cheaper than the diesel, not many want a motor that does 12 to 14mpg on average.

I suppose it depends what you need the car for. I wouldn't consider a P38 for a daily driver personally. Mine is just a Sunday fun car to tinker with, etc. Hence a V8 is the way to go :)
