Changing the front down pipe today, I had a new one stashed away and when unwrapped it does not have the flex before the cat or the mounting hanger rod, a label says manual trans, I wonder what can the difference be between the manual and auto trans have on the pipe moving, is the mounting hanger deleted to allow for more movement of the pipe to make up for lack of flex joint? Phoned around a bit and dont seem to be able to find an auto box one. I am sure I saw on here a weld in flex joint from ebay but cannot find it now.

Does it not fit? Thought both fitted?

On my '95 manual I have to sort of corkscrew the exhaust in over the crossmember. It only goes through one way. Might be different if you have it on a ramp.

Your right it did fit except the manifold end loose flange had the bolt hole centers way out so in the end I welded in a flex joint from my local car spares shop and used the old flange also welded on the hanger bracket from my old pipe as well, think it will last me and the car out, the original pipe was in really good condition except for the flex joint made of good steel. Tomorrow its the auto trans filter and rear diff pinion oil seal, hopefully!

That's worth remembering for the future.

Odd how the manual is all solid. Same on the rear prop where the auto had that rubber doughnut but the manual doesn't. Why make it different?!

The length of the prop? I can only assume that the auto prop is so short that the UJ exceeds its workable range at full droop so they put in the doughnut to give it a little extra movement. Or, being Land Rover, they raided the parts bin, found a prop that sorta fit, but not quite, so they used the doughnut as a spacer.

The other other alternative is it is to absorb some of the drive line shunt which you aren't likely to get from a manual.

Basically I haven't got a clue, just making **** up. :D:oops:
