Hi all I feel I might be getting somewhere at last. I'm not getting an RPM signal from the crankshaft position sensor. What would you recommend that I check now. I think once I get a signal I might be able to start it.

Try checking the sensor connector & adjustment, otherwise replace the sensor.

If you need to reset the CPS bracket it can be done by using a depth gauge. Put gauge on CPS until it touches tip of sensor and flange that mounts to bracket. Then set gauge 1 mm longer than that measurement and lock up. Turn engine until one of the position pips is directly central to the CPS hole. With depth gauge touching pip slide bracket back until it touches depth gauge. Tighten bracket. Check several times. A fiddly job, much better to turn a flanged tool same diameter as CPS but 1 mm longer from flange to tip. Normal air gap for a sensor that picks up from the flywheel teeth is around 0.030" or 0.8 mm. But for a sensor that picks up from the face of the flywheel, a little larger gap is usual to allow for fore and aft movement of crank on the thrust bearings.

how do i check the oil levels on a p38 auto range rover

I'm assuming you haven't got a dipstick!!!
Car flat and level, engine running, move up and down the selector a couple of times, pausing in each position for a moment and top up the box until it dribbles out the filler hole.
