When did Land Rover change over to electronic engine management as above I have a 300tdi and thought that all 300 were mechanical pump ect and electronics came in with Disco 2 TD5, but I find mine has a fly by wire throttle and a OBD plug under the drivers side dash, so what is it a Disco 1 engine with Disco 2 electronics . I didn't buy a Disco 2 TD5 because the guys I know that have Disco's say that the TD5 engine is like the kiss of death and parts for them cost a lot more than 300TDI, any one know were I stand or what I've bought.
Regards.

Mine's P reg, inside the door cards are stamped Jan 97 and it's manual pump non EDC. But then it doesn't have leather seats or sunroofs. Could it be related to the trim level rather than year of manufacture?

Presume you have an Auto ? If so, then you have EDC ( electronic diesel control ) - if its working ok, without the MIL on, then good, but if it gives trouble, then parts availability may be an issue, and you might need to change the FIP to a mechanical one off a manual.... The OBD connectivity is for other stuff too - like the immobiliser /alarm, ABS, Air bags blah blah...

EDC is a half way house, between "normal" old school injection, and common rail stuff. Higher injection pressures, and better fuel metering gives better efficiency, and, IIRC, was introduced to increase the power for the auto's, which are often described as sluggish.

Auto 300s were mechanical pump until the 1996MY was introduced, and then in the showrooms in June 1995 with EDC. I was in a showroom picking up a few brochures then, also looking at the newly introduced XS while my RR was in for its service... 21 years ago :(.
