p 38 auto box problem help please

Hi all only joined today hope ya can help I have a p 38 2.5 diesel 1999 since I have had vehicle it has allways displayed gearbox overheat but oil is good and I have done about eight thousand miles no probs , today it started not knowin what gear it was in and when went to restart it wouldnt til I rammed the stick forwards and back til it knew it was in park I have cleaned plug on selctor switch are these a commomn prob and is there a temp sensor for the box help would be appreciated thanks

Auto selector switch can need a clean

Check wire to front left fog gearbox oil cooler temp sender for overheat issues
