Overland Scandinavia

Hey all
Im starting to plan a trip to Scandinavia (not this year) & am looking for advise from anyone who has travelled there before or residents who can give their advise.
We would travel via ferry to Esbjerg & drive up through Denmark, Sweden, Finland to eventually end up in Alta in Norway in Late October for the Aurora & to venture into the Arctic circle & Sami country.
Does anyone know if there are any "driving off the road" restrictions in any of the above countries?
Do byways/green lanes exist? Can the wilderness be crossed by vehicle on any unmade roads?
I have read that within reason, it is possible to camp anywhere in the wilderness if not too close to a residence.
From experience, can anyone also advise what sort of snowfall to expect between September & November?

When I went to Norway never made it to far North. However a lot of there roads I found on the maps where no more than a gravel forest road here in the UK.

Wash board corners to make you squirm if taken to fast and start sliding to the big drop at the side.

Can't wait to get back and go North and get in to the wild some more. Also want to plan another trip to spend a week or so up on the Hardanger Plateau.

You'll need lots of Euros, and Krone etc.

As far as I know there are few greenlanes as such; but I read somewhere on a forum re travelling around the nordic countries, sorry can't remember which one. Search this one, diffflock, LR.

We'll be travelling to Scandinavia next year but arriving April/May time and travelling slightly opposite Denmark, Norway (as far as we can drive on road), onto Sweden, Finland and then out into Russia heading south to Eastern Europe. Would be good to compare notes/find out more re: your routes and plans. We plan to wild camp, (also couchsurf a bit hopefully due to distances, kids etc.). We are researching Norway right now - how good the roads further North, feasibility for time of year. We know wild camping not too much of an issue as long as not too close to main cities/dwellings, free motorway tolls, possibly 1 Euro to enter cities.
Garybrun - hope you won't mind a PM at some point from us also!

Vinnie - your right about those roads - think they are compacted gravel but still relatively OK from what we've been reading. You have any plans to go anytime again soon?

been on your site before-you have very lucky children!
will defo be in touch when I have a route together; Ive heard also that the far north is very much unmade roads etc etc I am at the moment trying to find out how far into the circle true wilderness starts really.
We would be going for approx 5 weeks so I am still deciding on the way there/back. Speed would be up through the centre through Sweden & have as much time as possible in north Norway, but I would very much like to follow the Norwegian fjordal coast. And of course visit some killer whales in the wild

We're thinking Bergen to start or thereabouts & coastal Fjords for us - roof of Norway up to Polar Circle (if feasible for us) to Artic Highway. Likewise - will let you know when we've got our stuff together regarding proper plan & anything of use. We're thinking around 3-4 weeks'ish Norway itself to make the best of it incl. decent exit plan into Sweden. Hmmm - killer whales! I was thinking nice rugged views and sea scapes. Look forward to hearing more.

Ryder, can we trade you our 5-year old? - untrained, a terror, loves mud puddles, no sense and needs to learn how to cook, drive car, mechanics etc. Comes complete with room full of toys, loves food and giving jip and cheek most of the time. Can sweet talk birds out of the trees - usually to get himself out of trouble. We'll take Kai in exchange - how long do you reckon for - about 5-years? Our little boy should come back to us nice and useful by then. Scandinavia - Norway in particular very costly - think a beer was about £5 last time we looked. Planning to be as self-sufficient as possible through this leg - most expensive through entire trip.

When are you opening your child training facility Ryder. I have two I can send straight down to you for a few years.

We are seriously going to do some penny saving, and yes self sufficiency is definately the key to Scandy I think...

Folks... you are too kind! The five year old may be a bit of a handful, but I bet he would get on with my three year old like wildfire! She too can sweet talk the birds out of the trees could you imagine them trying to out do eachother?

Kai... I can't take credit for him. He's just turned out that way. I don't do anything that I bet you guys do as well... it's just that he seems to have a flair and a little enthusiasm. (Where does enthusiasm turn to obsession?). Cassie I reckon you have the luckiest kids in the world!
