Overheating after fitting new Thermostat?

Just checked it again, top hose back to normal and flexible, coolant gone from header tank, but hasn't leaked anywhere, so has this been taken into the cooling system, and just needs more topping up and bleeding?

oh, and that little pipe from rad to tank, all clear, just blew through it

Id still try it without the thermostat, just to be sure.

So let me get this right, when you turn the engine off the water which comes back from the expansion tank has bubbles in it? Rather than bubbles coming up from the radiator?

the bubbles are coming from the pipe that goes between the thermostat to the bottom of the header tank, so air is coming back from the bottom of the radiator as thats where the thermostat is

From the thermostat to the bottom of the header tank? I didnt realise there was a pipe from there to there, I am confused - I will let someone reply who has not been drinking Vodka! If air is coming from the radiator though, either air lock as previously suggested...or perhaps something like head gasket which can show the symptom of bubbling. I woudl be tempted to take the thermostat out, drain all the water and start again. But again, will let someone else take over who knows what they are talking about! Good luck!

i dont think you can run it without the thermostat on a p38 4.0? its a one piece unit like a heart, 3 pipes connect on top and then all goes into bottom of the radiator...

had sniff test done and confirmed no gasses, so shouldnt be head, this was done last week anyway... but the old thermostat had seized and confirmed once it was off.. now just having problems with a new one, hopefully it is just a simple air lock.. i'll try and raise it up though tommorow, as it is nose dived at the moment due to eas fault

Oh, forget taking the thermostat out then, forgot yours isnt the insert type like on my series.

Sniff test? I do that with my underpants in the morning. My wife says it is not a very good test.

The header tank can be empty as the coolant replaces the air in the system. Top it up and keep going you will get all the air out.... eventually

Hi.

You should have un-done the top hose from the rad and started to fill up the system with 50/50 coolant + radiator water [ not tap water ] from there....., this would have put so much more coolant in the system.. the header tank will take forever ... no point just using water as the boiling point is 100 deg C with coolant added the boiling point is raised somewhat!, plus now you have to do it ALL over again with the correct mixture...

hope this helps?

ok, latest update..

-had the thermostat off again to check it work (yes it does)
-had radiator out and flushed
-topped up water again
-filled up water by hose on top of rad
-idled for half hour topping up if nessacery, with heaters on full
-after 20 minutes put cap back on and this caused heaters to go cold and temp gauge to go up
-took cap off and heaters get warm again
-left running for a bit
-put cap again on heaters go cold and temp rises
-took cap off heaters get hot but this time the temp wouldnt go down for a few minutes so shut it off
-then when loads of air bubbles back to the expansion tank like a kettle

any ideas?

igot one but you not going to like it, one or more of your water ways has gone. you could try irontite in it, but be warned it is not a fix. but it will get you going, and make your car userbil. but dont ask for how long cos nobody knows. mine lasted 8 months, then i had to put a engine in.. good luck..

Waterways? If the car had the head gasket done last week by a garage, should they have seen this? and should they be liable for the repairs?

you cannot see the water ways, i had all this last year with mine. did heads twice in 3 weeks then put irontite in. it stoped the overheating as i said, but still had to put a engine in. ring them up and tell them you want your cash back, befor you start to pay for a new engine..

tis not up to me to tell you not to try, but i think you be wasting your time. if you mess about with it and he finds out, he will say you have broken it.[can you see where i is comming from] i understand you dont want to give up on it, if you want to try something to fix it, go on to ebay and look at irontite, it will cost you £30 if that fixes it you know the engine is fooooked..

I've just gone out again as its cooled down, coolant had been taking back down, so topped that up, turned her on, idled for 15 minutes, and seems good, heaters hot, no pressurizing.. then when turned out a lot less boiling and then after 5 minutes its took that lot of water down too... so do you think it may need more water? or am i on a never ending cycle? theres not much water coming out the exhausts, and no leaks...
