Overfilled Overdrive

Afternoon All!

Just been to top up the oil in the gearbox, transfer box and overdrive. Gearbox was fine, just a little dribbled out when i removed the fill plug; the transfer box was nearly empty and the overdrive was overflowing (well! Dip stick had oil nearly all the way to the top).

Now, the questions are these:

1) D'you reckon i've done any/much damage to me transfer box (not driven far like this)?
2) Can i damage the overdrive with too much in it?
3) is there a breather on the overdrive that would release the surplus, or, is that the reason i now have leaks where there were none before?
4) How come the gearbox wasn't overfull with transfer box oil and the overdrive was?

First time i've had to poke around under that bit, so forgive the more than likely daft questions. landrover been off the road more than it has been on - one of the many joys of a series, eh?

When I bought my first Landy I almost made the mistake of only filling the gearbox with oil,thought the gearbox and transfercase used the same oil,maybe thats what happened with you,the previous owner only checked the gearbox oil,the overdrive I can't help you,no experience!If there is damage you will hear it, otherwise just drive it!

It's likely that you have had the common problem of 'oil transfer' between the 'boxes.
Tends to happen due to difference in temperature between them.
Just correct the levels to the level plugs and it should be OK.
Overfilling doesn't normally cause too much of a problem: it just wees oil everywhere.
Of course, you could remove the 'boxes, strip it, replace the seals, re-build it etc, but it's easiest to check and adjust the levels every few months depending on how much you use it.

Naturally he will be taking out the transmission, stripping the whole thing down, replacing all the seals, and reassembling it all prior to refitting.

Surely no-one on this forum would take the wimp way out of just topping-up once in a while?
