Hi All

Im stuck in France and cant speak a work of french so wondered if I could ask for some advise....

I have a Freelander 2003 TD4 and am having a few problems.
Firstly, my turbo was working over time and I had no additional power when driving above 50mph in 4th gear or any speed in 5th.
I replaced the turbo airpipe and this seemed to rectify the problem for about 2 weeks.

Now, my engine is constantly over reving. I can be driving normally and start off fine, I change up to 3rd gear and my revs will go from under 2000rpm to almost 4000rpm.

Once this has started it will keep doing it all day. My engine management light does not come on.

My vehicle has done 115000km and a local dealer said that I needed a new clutch mechanism. This might be correct but I just wanted to get a second opinion as the same dealer tried to get me to buy a whole new turbo a few weeks back when I only needed one air pipe.

Can anyone offer any advise?

Thanks

If you can't wait until you get back to the UK and cannot try any of the suggestions given here alraady then your best bet might be to try a main dealer. They will charge more but are far more likely to be able to deal with you in English than a small garage.

Most important thing to remeber when in need of help in France is a big smile and Bonjour as you enter. Then politely ask them in French if they speak English. They (normally) will be as good as gold from then on.

Hi Slob
Im slap bang in the middle of France (the Creuse area) and my local Dealer (I say Local) is about 125km away (montlucon). I think I may have to try the old 'Smile and Bonjour' with the dealer to see if they can sort it.

One question I do have, if im having this problem (the engine management light has not yet come on) and the engine isn't missing a beat and the turbo is not racing out of control - am I ok to drive the 125km to the dealers? ...

... by asking Im tempting fate as I struggled to get the the end og my road this morning (400m) at a top speed of 15mph.

I also recall the dealers saying (when they fixed the airpipe problem) that I needed new clutch hydraulics (although this was replaced in March 2007 by a Landrover dealer in chesterfield UK) so Im reluctant to let them change the clutch mechanism unless it really needs doing (as the hydraulics definately dont).

Hi All

Thanks for all your advice on this one.

I think I have found the MAF and will have a go at disconnecting it.

fingers crossed it will be ok and at least last me until I reach the UK

Thanks again

ps. If it doesn't work I may be back picking your brains again :)

Is Frog100's clutch slipping like crazy?

Not a good description so far, so tricky to diagnose.

Is Frog100 saying that the engine goes faster than the car?

If so, dead clutch plate, and if it's been driven a long way like that and slipping like crazy, fried and rivet-grooved flywheel and pressure plate more than likely. Expensive coming up.
