ive known pin holes in rads that arent visible till engine is under full load, if i couldnt find a leak head gasket would be my next consideration if thermostat etc is working properly

Come on James, that's not the sort of issue that I want to think about for now. I look to you to provide me with reassurances of a minor, very inexpensive nature:)

Flush the cooling system out with cocacola, and then break an egg into it!
One of my Series ran like that for over a year before I got the chance to change rads!:cool:

+1... I had this recently and it turned out to be the thermostat. re-reading from the start you need to work out where the leak is though.

Get the tool to pressurise your system and find that leak first!
The coolant not under pressure will boil at a lower temp and dump out of the expansion tank which possibly causes an air lock which buggers up the heating.

Sort the leak and you Won't wreck the head.

The coolant leak is now sorted and a new genuine LR thermostat fitted. Have just now got home with a new battery. Have also found a local garage who might have the required analytical equipment to undertake a check to see what is going ono_O. Here in Ireland, high tech equipment is not always readily available to undertake checks. Hammer and pliers would be the "state of the art" equipment favoured outside Dublin

Hi Michael. I hope that you were not offended by my analysis of the typical Irish Counry garage

You've obviously never been 'up the blue' when one of these porblems appeared!
That's what we did, and it worked!! :p:p:p
Hello you old sea dog ;) I have no idea what you mean by "never been up the blue" when one of those problems appears:D perhaps you could explain to a common landlubber what the Rear Admiral is talking about? My only naval knowledge stems from my undevoted allegiance to Popeye the Sailor Man:rolleyes:

'Up the blue' is out in the middle of nowhere, with the nearest town being a zillion miles away!
However, even there it is possible to find eggs hidden, waiting to hatch! ;)
My only naval knowledge that I will admit to is getting the fluff out of it :D:D
