My td5 has been losing coolent (half pint a day) for 4 or 5 months now but Ive been keeping it topped up. I payed 29 euros for a gallon of coolent on saturday so I decided to try and fix this leak in my wallet . I bought some rad weld and put it in the cooling system as the instructions on the tin said . On the way to work this morning after about 15 miles on the motorway the temp gauge climbed almost to the red I slowed to 45 and it went back to normal I decided not to risk driving on to work and nursed it home and drove wifes car to work. Ive been out looking at it this evening it took a half gallon of coolent but started first time. What do ye think head gasket or maybe head or something minor which would be nice?

Sounds like headgasket I'm afraid. Check that you haven't sealed the thermostat shut. It's very likely you have. Don't forget it has 2 valves and not 1 like a conventional thermostat.

thanks ratty thats what I hope it is not the head itself Ive talked to the main steelers they say head gasket on a td5 is a big job{big bucks} I dont have the faciltys or confidense to attempt it myself

Due to the age of the vehicle I would guess that your engine still has nylon dowels fitted and these have deforemed causing he head to move. This was the problem with mine (1999 T reg defender).

If you overheat it you risk damaging the injector rail that is built into the head and the fuel cooler. Injector rail fooked means a new head. Fuel cooler fooked is £240.

I paid £500 to get my headgasket done by my local engineers instead of doing it myself because of lack of time and I wanted to make sure that it was done properly and that it had a warantee on it.

Bought it private about 2 years ago I THINK the head was allready done so I presume the plastic dowels have been replaced with steel ones just hoping or praying why the fook do we love em

yeah mine is problery the same anyway they cant fit me in until next thuesday Ill let you no how I get on thanks very much for the help
