Evening all,

In an attempt to lessen the drivetrain shunt and lash on my S3 SWB, I've replaced both props, yokes and all UJs. Whilst I had the rear prop off I pondered about how much slack there's supposed to be in the gearbox system.

With it in 1st gear, and disconnected at the rear diff, I get about 1.5" of rotation along the outside edge of the handbrake drum. Is this normal? Should it be less? Of course, I need to check the diff too, there's a thought.

I've uploaded a naff Youtube video of it if anyone is interested - [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hFdx7zuwo8&hd=1"]YouTube- ‪Landy output shaft lash‬‎[/nomedia]

Also, the seal under the castle nut on the output shaft. Is that FRC1780 and is it easy to replace? I took the yoke off, and it decided I needed a shower of EP90 :) I can't find the part number in any of the S3 parts books, but Google says it might be FRC1780 :)

Cheers

Kyle

About an inch and a quarter is what I get on a recon box fitted not all that long ago.

Mines about the same - not great....

....Sorry to hyjack thread but do you get a banging noise when you disengage gears?

Not when I disengage gears, but I do when I'm coming to a stop or very low speeds. Sometimes it can be prevented by leaving it in gear and very gently riding the clutch, or very gentle application of the handbrake. That's what led me to believe it was something post-gearbox-ish

I have a late s3 and experience the same - with the clanking..

1.5" rotational play seems a lot of backlash..

From the postings it seems common - is there a fix without replacing the complete drivetrain?

Cheers, Andy

You will also get sloppiness in the diff and sometimes the driveshaft/driveflange joints.
