Oh how I'd like to say ispirational and tomorrow soon as I wake rush off to my chassis that has been in the garage for over 18 months. Well done it is looking well.

Andy.

Thanks :) Good luck with yours! Shouldn't bee too much different to how you left it unless it is sitting on grass!

Today we have reversed an airbox from a Range Rover EFI by cutting it open on both ends and swapping the ends round. Simply so that the air filter is easy to get out rather than having to unbolt it each time we want to change/check the air filter! Tucked away in the wing quite nicely, well away from the heat of the engine and the end pokes out the hole ready for the snorkel to be attached :)

Mounted the fan today, just need to sort wiring etc for it.

Then had a look at the dumb iron. Thought it would be an easy job, but as usual it was a pain in the ass! Had a poke around and had to cut out a fair amount of it. What is really strange is that all of the rest of the dumb iron is full thickness and no rust at all, yet the stuff which has got rot is paper thin. Beats me!

Anyway, cut out all the crap:

And re-made. Used a stick welder for a fair part of the welding to get the places that the MIG can't reach. When hacking apart the old one noticed that the panel hadn't been welded all the way - perhaps this let water in and hence the rust? Hmm (dumb iron has already been replaced at some point in it's life)

Used thicker steel than standard and added in a bit of re-inforcement

End cap welded on, cleaned up the other side too and gave that a good poking about (good condition, fortunately) and painted up. Sorted!

Looking good! Have you done anything about the wiring? The more attention my wiring gets the more things need replacing.. I just put it all back together and ignored the extra wires.

Yup wiring sorted out...whole lot stripped out and replaced, which personally I think is the best way to go. Just needs some of that black trunking stuff to cover it up and some P clips or something to hold it in place.

Adding a few extra bits like flasher lights for indicator direction, 12V sockets, internal and external temp display/clock, dual charge system, volt meter (switchable between the 2 batteries) and the fan thermostat stuff but it is pretty much there now.

looks good, i'm glad i'm not the only one with OCD when it comes to neat wiring layouts!!! :D

are you fitting a cabin heater? i see your airbox is where the standard heater matrix goes....

Haha, yeah, perhaps it is a bit obsessive ripping the lot out and starting again when it was otherwise working...but some things just have to be done right.

Oh yes, deffo having a heater...and yes...Series 2/2A have them in the cabin. TBH I would have converted to the cabin one even if it was in the engine bay because IMHO that's the best place for the air filter to go.

Civilian ones typically have those round heaters in the passenger footwell and from my experience either do bugger all or burn the passengers ankles. I didn't want that, and they get in the way anyway...so I got a 24V military one, swapped over the motor to a 12V one (with only slight modification to mount it) and put it behind the gear selector. Outlets plumbed in with hoover attachments - works a treat :)

Swapped over the wheels and tyres at the weekend...had a set of Colways kicking about on Disco rims so fitted those. I have been told that I need to cut out little wedges for them to fit...I didn't need to do this...what's that all about then?

Not sure wether I want to paint them black or leave them slightly rusty original silver. What do you reckon? Just need to fix the wiper washer and then its time to book for a trial run MOT!

Hopefully will be able to see where I am going in the desert with these...

I think the 'cutting little wedges out of the wheels' thing is to do with the Rostyle steel wheels that were fitted to early Range Rovers and 90s. I had a look at fitting some to my Landy but concluded that it wasn't worth the effort.

Oh right. Perhaps the person that told me that was a little confused then. Which is re-inforced by the fact that 2 out of the 5 disco wheels I have from him have the notches cut out and the others don't!

The welder is my stepdad. His name isn't Ned LOL!

Passed :D :D :D :D :D

Zero advisorsies :D :D :D :D :D :D

Must be doing something half right eh?!

Need to figure out why its now making a clunking noise when I pull off!
