OS Maps on iPhone

Hi Rob,

The points I looked at was cost and use on a hudl2.

I found that OS maps was only £20 for a year if you download the maps, plus you can get 1:25 K and 1:50K maps.

But, I think compared to something like MM it may not be quite as user friendly yet. I used it the other month and it appeared to work well.

the beauty of Viewranger is that...
1) you only need to download the sections of maps that are of interest, not the whole of the UK.
2) the are downloaded offline, so they are still available if you loose signal (not GPS obviously)
3) once downloaded they are linked to your account, so that you can use them on multiple devices, without extra cost.
4) existing routes created by others are downloadable, so saves time.
5) you can add POI or pictures to show particular obstacles, features or POI.

So sounds the same as OS maps from what I can see.

How expensive is Viewranger to download compared to OS when you have the whole country for £20 per annum. Or is it a case of six of one half a dozeon of the other?
When I get a chance i will check the price to download the bash maps on viewranger against the OS cost.

i dont know. More expensive, but who needs the whole OS set? I have all of dorset, north Hampshire and west surrey for about £10 (1:50K) which is good enough for most of my laning activities, and then can order any more squares when I need them. If I aint leading, then i route trace, then download the relevant maps later for next time.
 
Dunno about OS, £20 a year seems ok but is that £20 every year?

If I'd used that from when I started laning I'd have bunged them £200 by now :eek:

I used to use MM but after losing most everything changing devices a few years ago I started again with VR a few years ago.

Not used it for a while so downloaded the app onto my new phone before heading to the Lakes a couple of weeks ago and there were all my maps :)

I still like sprawling a paper map out on the floor every now and then but use 25k laning or walking, just buy the bits I want when I want them.
 
I bought paper maps, which I really rather like. May be some kind of nostalgia? Plus it is a fun challenge to read a map properly, but sadly my navigator (my wife) kept loosing track when greenlining on Salisbury Plain - just not enough sign posts I guess! LOL ;)

So a GPS-based OS map would be ideal. There is an OS map app as well. Rubbish rating on the AppStore. But at least I don't have to buy the same maps again, as I can use the code printed on the maps I have...

ViewRanger is certainly very highly rated on the store - and it is very reassuring to hear that you guys use it too! :D
 
I have used ViewRanger ever since my 4x4 response days, quick question say I byway gets changed to a bridleway, do the MPs automatically update, or update only when I re-download the map again, or don't update at all. Thanks
 
Sorry MPs, should of been maps, silly fingers on small phone.

ROW Officer in West Sussex is about as useful a square wheel. Considering that all unclassified roads were made in to bridleways even the ones with public car parks along them, they really don't know what they were doing in West Sussex.

Would love if Glass were to come down they would have a field day with some of them.

I don't do as much as Lansing as is used to which is a shame as love it, but not much around in West Sussex. No I was asking out of curiosity mainly.
 
Can't beat viewranger IMO, one off cost for all 1:50k mapping whole of Devon / Cornwall for all devices (about a tenner from memory). IPhone works very well as GPS and is very accurate .
 
Is there a way of buying a county or large area without selecting squares. I managed to do the entire county of Norfolk, but having trouble with East & West Sussex and Kent.

Also I have the Norfolk county already as said, would if I bought the entire country would I be like paying for Norfolk again, or do they give reductions for areas already owned.

Memory map are experts at this, twice I have bought their product and twice they have written to me wanting me to "upgrade" ( at 60% cost again) within months,
My full set of 50k maps bought new on CD I had to pay £15 per device to use as they are now called legacy maps and can't be used (without paying )
I bought the 25k uk set this year as a download, if you are thinking of this beware, the download is done square at a time, and then they need activating square at a time it's a lifetimes work.
Don't know about alternatives but MM will never see any of my money again.
Keep mine on an Samsung android pad and use it for hiking, gps is a bit slow but it works pretty well.

The OS £20 a year subscription is only for online viewing, you do no to get to download to your device, so no 3G means no maps when you are out in the wilds, with ViewRanger, as others have said, you have your maps available on your device at all times.

I too had to abandon memory map after years use, since windows PPC in fact, and started my collection again with ViewRanger a few years ago. I also subscribe to the OS service, I think £20 a year to have the full country down to 25k and bang up to date, available at any computer or device I choose to log in to is well worth it.

My apologies, I have just had a play and I can now download maps, I have subscribed for a while now, and you used to only be able to view online or download the areas of paper maps you had bought....

Should have engaged brain before depressing mouth, or whatever that old saying is!! :D
