Hi, forgive my ignorance but ive been looking at my os landranger maps and round my way there seem to be quite a few lanes marked on the map by 2 black lines showing the lane with red dots in between? Am I right in saying these lanes are ok to drive???

Thanks in advance for any pointers!!

Hi,

The red dots you are talking about show there is a unspecified public right of way (Other route with public access). Quite often these are vehicular rights but you can only be sure if you check the local council definitive map.

In the Peaks the black lines are usually the drystone walls on each side of the lane, and a good percentage of them are UCRs with firm stone bases, often with a 'Lane' name , i.e Long Lane, Pillwell Lane etc, and are quite driveable. (Try the OS Explorer maps for a bit more detail - the dots are green instead of red). I usually assume a track with a Lane name must be a road - unless proven otherwise when you get there:eek:

Watch out though because some are very narrow and/or rutted, and quite a few now are being de-classified or TRO'd.

Try www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/vehicles for more info.

Cheers
Chris

A good example is the well named 'Green Lane' - Off the A515 just north of Newhaven - I always give it a go if I'm in the area:D

I can't guarantee it's 100% legal - but plenty of people drive it and there's no apparent restriction.

How many times does it have to be said...........many time on here cause people cant be bothered to read older posts........

There is only one way to find out if you have a legal right to drive the lane, hear say and maps give you no rights to use one marked on an OS map.

Only one way and thats to contact the local council for that area and get the information from the definitve Rights of Way Map that the Rights of Way Officer holds.

They may also be a list posted by the council on their website that may beable to help, that will list any TRO's that may be in force be they perminent or Temp/seasonal.

Do the right footwork before you go off road, and dont cause any more anomosity from the public about 4x4's.

As an example I found a lane that was marked on a map with two black lines near Chelmsford, think it was called Dove lane, from memory, Could not decided if there was a RoW on it, one quick call to RoW at Esssex Council, and na there was no Public Row.

I've joined my local club! Going out with them in a couple of weeks..
Don't fancy the fine or getting my car taken off me! Easier that way...

Indeed it is.

I've done the lanes to the south of Newhaven, although not Minniglow/Gallowlow as it is still VR'd to my knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed Roystone Grange despite it's hard base; it's just a lovely lane through a valley.

Royston Grange is just up the road from me, i might check that one out looks very civilized and looks like i wouldnt get into too much trouble... :)
